A Novel and Creative Work

Writing a training program is a daunting experience for the novice, even if the writer is articulate, intelligent and educated. It is like learning to fillet a fish, how to swing a golf club, or how to tie a full windsor knot. Author Guila Muir attempts to do that here by using kite building as a metaphor for creating training. If the reader doesn't succeed she probably didn't read the book more than once or comprehend what she read.

Muir provides simple explanations, eye-catching graphics and numerous worksheets for people to download and print. Two things caught my attention immediately: 1) objectives and 2) her structure for design and activities. She defines objectives clearly as learning outcomes so the reader does not confuse what the trainer is supposed to teach vs. what the learner is supposed to be able to do at the end of the training that he cannot do at the start of training. An objective is not subject to interpretation which she clarifies as if you cannot see it or hear it, it is open to interpretation and therefore, subject to misinterpretation. Her structure is simple. content, materials, and activities are compelling. Content is presentation, but activities is facilitation, and facilitation and practice equals training--or performance.

With 25 years of training experience and training personnel to become instructors, I found her information useful, and I will adapt the above to our training.

While I don't believe she made it crystal clear that tests should mirror the objectives, this is a novel and creative work.

Fantastic resource for anyone who needs to design and present!

Need to turn something you know into something that someone else knows?

Then Guila's book is exactly what you need. With it's practical approach and a few hours of reading and working, Guila will take you from OH NO to OHHHH YEAH!!

This book is not written from a formal, educational perspective. It is written as a manual intended to guide you through the process of designing and presenting. While reading this book, you will feel as if Guila is right there helping you through designing process and getting you ready to present your material. From the very begining you will be starting to develop YOUR project. No complicated formulas, acronyms, or mnemonics; just practical advice to help you shine. By the time you finish the book, you will have finished your program, you will have included some great ways to bring the material to life for the audience. They will be engaged in the material and as a result will be better prepared to put what they learned to use.

If you are looking for a treatise on Instructional Design...look elsewhere. If you are looking for a practical guide to help you right now....this is the book! If you have to present material or ideas to people in group settings, this book is required reading.

This ol' instructional designer learned a few tricks!

Guila, I think your book nicely lays out all the necessary steps to create and deliver a course. I was happy to see I follow the same strategies when I design online learning (my specialty and company focus). Overall, your book is a great guide, and quick to read and apply.

Some takeaways for me and the online course I deliver (My Great & Gorgeous E-Course):

- work more on the hook before each major lesson or module (I preach the advanced organizer or lesson booster)
- ensure there are more intros by everyone online through the live facilitated webinar or in a discussion post (I ask but does not always happen in an asynch environment). Perhaps make a game/ice breaker out of it
- have learners be more active during live facilitated webinars (delivered weekly) by polling, asking questions and showing how the webinar tools work, first
- create a stronger closure by adding a review section in my online course and bridging to next steps, and adding a final evaluation to check their overall understanding
