About the Author
Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D., published over 600 reports and articles as well as thirty books. His early work led to the use of vitamin B3 for schizophrenia and as an anticholesterol treatment. He introduced Bill W., cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous, to the concept of megavitamin therapy.

Little book, big cure starring niacin (vitamin B3)

If not a cure then very close to one. Briefly stated-- The vitamin cure for alcoholism is niacin. The old fashioned kind that gives you a flush. 20 years ago this was the common form of niacin but has since been crowded out of the market by the no_flush, time release niacin which is not what you want to buy. Rugby makes this kind of flushing niacin. Swanson has their own brand of flushing niacin that is 500mg capsule x 250 capsules x $6.98 and as of December 2013. Swanson and Rugby niacin can be bought at Amazon. Buy the 500mg size and start with part of the tablet or capsule. Eat it at mealtime to reduce or eliminate the flush. Hoffer will say 1.5-3 grams is a good daily amount for you. You take niacin a few times a day and the daily total is 1.5-3 grams. Maybe some need more but start gradually. Don't be scared of the niacin flush, it is your friend.

Everyone has a different niacin reaction. I started gradually....By now I am up to 1000mg first thing in the morning. Taken with 4oz hot or cold water. This produces more of a flush than when taken with food. The classic Abram Hoffer (niacin guru who lived to 91) advice is to take niacin after meals. I take a few more 500mg capsules during the day so I take about 2500mg daily. To get over the hump you need to spread out your niacin. You want to maintain high niacin levels in your body throughout the day. So divided doses of niacin.
I know that if I took zero niacin for a week then took 500mg with hot water, that I will get a strong flush. I have done this. This is what scares off niacin newbies. Once you start daily niacin and take it a few times during the course of a day, the flush gets diminished.

Niacin is the core but get this book for the full story. Such as take a good B-50 complex a few times a day. This is a common supplement and contains 50mg of all the B vitamins. Take Thiamin (B1) (preferably the benfotiamine variety of B1) for brain health and repair. Yes, the B50 complex contains niacin and thiamin but you need more of those two. Also take vitamin C. The easiest C to take for me is the magnesium ascorbate powder and I take a total of 3 half teaspoons each day in divided doses. This equals about 3 grams of C. Magnesium ascorbate is a buffered C.

Eating a more plant based diet will help you. Take chromium picolinate which helps glucose metabolism. Read the book- "Lifting Depression: The Chromium Connection". He advocates 1000 mcg chromium picolinate daily. Many are in mild or severe depression caused by long term alcohol overuse. You might be a functional alcoholic who still does well at your job. Your life is not a mess but you have mild depression. Good for you! You have been strong so far. Intelligent use of niacin + B vitamins will lift this curtain of unhappiness.

Why all the B vitamins? Because high alcohol intake over years has put you into B vitamin deficiency. Why? Because alcohol functions much like sugar in your body and in the process of being metabolized it has been using up any store of B vitamins you have. When you start a high intake of niacin and the other B vitamins your sugar and glucose metabolism is returned to normal. So you will have reduced desire for alcohol due to hypoglycemic cravings. Cut it out totally perhaps.

buy it!!

This little book may have saved my girlfriends life. In fact we are wondering if she ever really was an alcoholic or just nutritionally imbalanced the whole time. We went out and bought all the recommended supplements and immediately started taking them even during detox. Within days she was filled with energy, hope and happiness. The best part of course is no urge to drink. Her body was definitely craving something but it was nutrients not alcohol. I've never seen her so happy and content. Try this if everything else has failed. In fact try this first and see what happens.

A Healthy Solution Worth Considering

Recently I started taking B3 & Vitamin C for heart & skin benefits. I noticed after 2 weeks that my desire to drink (which is an issue) had diminished to the point that I found myself refusing a second glass of wine. Since this had been a Will I had been trying to achieve for more than 2 years I figured it must have something to do with the recent introduction of B3 & Vitamin C. I would much rather consume high doses of Vitamins and be high functioning than subject myself to a bottle of wine and not be able to handle anything!

The last its author completed, published in 1914, two years before his death at 48, it voices the spiritual desolation of a society that had deliberately transformed itself from quasi-feudal isolation to determinedly modern player on the world stage in little more than 50 years. The never-named narrator-hero of the novel’s first half is a provincial student in Tokyo who befriends a man some 20 years older whom he meets on a beach that is a favorite student getaway site. Well-mannered, educated, comfortable, ostensibly happily married though childless, the man, whom the narrator regularly visits once they’re both back in the city, yet exudes sadness. In the book’s second half, narrated by Sensei (i.e., mentor), as the student calls him, we learn why: he feels he betrayed a friend by first pressing his suit for the woman both love. Penguin has offered a lovely translation ~

I checked this out as an eBook from my local library since the only hard copies were the previous translations. For those who sigh at another translation, remember that Kokoro, like many classic novels are public domain of sorts. Any publisher can copy the work as long as they credit the author and don't change the original. For translations the rules are a bit more flexible. But Penguin decided they would rather translate the original than pay another publisher for the rights to their translation. I think that's fair. It's like Beethoven. You don't have to pay to use the music, but if you use someone's recording of said Beethoven piece, you need to pay them.

Kokoro is an interesting novel. It is broken down into 3 parts. It is interesting that the chapters are all nearly identical length, about 2 pages each chapter in this version. So there are 110 chapters. But it's not a terribly long read.

The first section deals with the protagonist and his relationship with 'sensei', a seemingly well to do older man. They become acquaintances and finally develop an almost father-son relationship. The second part deals with the protagonist's father who is dying and his relationship with the family. The final section is actually a memoir sent to the protagonist by 'sensei' detailing the events of his younger life and shedding light on some of the mystery behind 'sensei'.

This translation is pretty amazing. I don't read Japanese (at least Kanji though I can read some hiragana pretty well), but I do understand much of the Japanese language. It is difficult to translate not because of the actual words, but because Japanese is subject-object-verb instead of subject-verb-object as in English. So if you literally translate you will sound like Yoda. "I, to this location, must now go," and such. So it is interesting that this translation seems to have less fluff than other translations. Japanese is a relatively straightforward style of writing, focusing on precision and emphasis on more emotions from fewer words. I think this translation caught the original Japanese style and kept the sentences shorter and crisper with more emphasis on the key words and phrases and less on lengthy adjectives. Also, Soseki likes to keep is characters vague and nameless (sounds a lot like a modern Japanese author I know), so they seem to have more mystique. Although it is believed that the 'sensei' character was based at least in part on Soseki himself.

Natsume Soseki is considered the father of modern Japanese literature. He was in what I like to call the Japanese Algonquin Tatami (I totally made it up but it kind of fits). It was a group of talented, though seemingly radical authors in the first half of the 20th century in Japan. Soseki traveled to England and developed a number of neurosis there and upon his return to Japan. His works are peppered with satirical elements, this novel less so than others such as 'I am a Cat'. But I mention this so that folks understand a bit of his influence to his writing. We was definitely a critic of the 'modern' Japanese society of the early 1900s.

I would HIGHLY recommend reading Botchan first. Botchan is Soseki's Huck Finn if you will. It is widely praised for its quality, its flow, and its interesting and very smart alecky protagonist. I actually equate the protagonist to Holden Caufield from Catcher in the Rye. Kokoro is among Soseki's most serious novels and is cited as a major influence by many great Japanese authors such as Yukio Mishima.

Fun fact: Natsume Soseki graced the 1000 yen bank note from 1984 to 2004. Wouldn't it be cool to have Mark Twain and Edgar Allen Poe on US bills?

A Touching Japanese Classic

This is the first novel I've read by Natsume Soseki, and my first Japanese novel at that. Although I haven't read another translation, the novel is beautifully written, being succinct yet flowery and powerful at times. Certain lines clearly and powerfully convey the feelings of Meiji Japan. Some recurring themes, such as the animosity between younger and older generations, are still relevant today. Additionally, the fact that this novel takes place in Japan during the Meiji period means it effectively captures the contrast between city and rural life. To me, this book is one I'll treasure forever; it has affected me deeply, compelling me to question my own development as a student, as well as my relationship with my father.

Additionally, because I am a casual reader I was delighted to discover that every chapter is approximately 2 pages long.

Overall, Kokoro is a Japanese classic that offers an emotional and compelling read.

which translation matters

Everyone agrees Kokoro is a masterpiece of modern Japanese literature but for English readers the quality of translation from the Japanese is crucial. It should be noted that the translation of Kokoro Schwalbe chose for "The End of the World Book Club" was by Edwin McClellan, whose translations of Soseki are celebrated, not the translator of the Penguin edition. Newer is not always better.

About the Author
For more than 10 years, Jesse Karp has been a school librarian at LREI (Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School), one of Manhattan s oldest independent schools and a long-standing leader in progressive education. He works with students across the curriculum, from beginning readers to high school students, with all kinds of material, including graphic novels. He regularly reviews graphic novels and picture books for Booklist and contributes to the magazine s yearly graphic novel best list roundup, as well as having written articles for Book Links and American Libraries. He has delivered seminars on the sequential art form at Pratt Institute and Queens College and teaches a graduate course about the history and analysis of the form at Pratt. He has served as a graphic novel panelist at Book Expo America for two years running and served on YALSA s Great Graphic Novels for Teens committee from 2009 to 2012. He co-created the education webcomic Dr. Lollipop and is the author of the young adult novel Those That Wake, which is set in Manhattan, where he lives with his wife and two daughters.

Rush Kress graduated from the illustrious Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Illustration in 1999. Thorough and engaging

This is a terrific tool for educating yourself and others about the wide world of graphic novels (aka comic books). Meant for school libraries (obviously) and classrooms, it is nonetheless a great walk through the history and importance of the form.

Beneath the battle cries of the jihad and an Islamic political system that draws attention to a religion of rigid rules and obsessive devotion lies the mystical form of Islam known as Sufism. What attracts so many Westerners to this particular Islamic sect is its "heart made of poetry and art, vision and devotion, that can only be known fully from within." Enchanted by the metaphysics of Sufism, author Ibn al-Rawandi,a former convent, studied and warshiped in Cyprus, convinced he had found the answers to life's questions. But when doubts emerged about the faith for which the traditionalist authors had no answers, and the Slman Rushdie affair focused world attention on the need to critically evaluate Islam, Rawandi began his own assessment of Sufism. In Islamic Mysticism, Rawandi examines the traditional Muslim story of the origin of Islam in detail, taking full account of the work of contemporary Western scholars, revealing the unreliable nature of Muslim sources, and undermining the conventional picture of the life of Muhammad and the origin of the Koran. The collapse of these classical accounts takes with it the conventional story of the origin of Sufism.

Rawandi's detailed study of the philosophy of religion-especially the work of traditionalists such as Ren Gunon and Frithjof Schon-helps him to develop a critical analysis of Islam from the inside out. Particular attention is given to the great Islamic mystic Ibn Arabi, a representative of Sufism in its highest development. Also included is an examination of a little-known controversy in the Islamic world surrounding the occurance of the number nineteen in Koran, shedding new light on that document.

In tandem chapters in each of the book's four parts, Rawandi presents first the traditional Islamic interpretaion, drawn from original sources and sympathetic contemporary interpreters; next he presents a critical view of the same material from a secular perspective. In the end, Rawandi's critical examination of Sufism leads to the conclusion that mystical experience is not a trustworthy validation of religion.

could have been titled Why I Am Not a Muslim II

The author provides very little information about himself; he joined a sufi order in Cyprus in 1985 and left them three years later, he has written for Philosophy Now and New Humanist and now lives in London. His pseudonym is taken from a famous historical skeptic of Islam; it makes it hard to Google him without getting results for the well-known one. Chapter two of this book appears in another form as chapter two of the pseudonymous Ibn Warraq's The Quest for the Historical Muhammad. A reviewer of that book, Fred McGraw Donner, speculates they're the same person. Well, in a sense they might as well be: two unknown writers critical of Islam who don't appear to have any original ideas of their own.

I liked the first two parts of the book. He does a decent job of summarizing the origins of Islam from the Islamic standpoint, and then the criticism of the sources hits the mark, I think. However, he lacks the same skepticism regarding some of the works providing a different account of the origins of Islam. He completely accepts Hagarism:The Making of the Islamic World, for example (maybe Prometheus Press should simply reprint that book?).

I found the chapter on Islamic mysticism to be almost totally incomprehensible, even though the book is supposed to be aimed at "the general reader" as he says. Most of it focuses on ibn Arabi. Maybe the ideas are just so irrational and esoteric they make no sense (quite possible), or perhaps he's just really bad at explaining mystical Islam. I found the following chapter on the secular perspective of sufism to be just barely more comprehensible. The short chapter "Islam's View of Itself in the Modern World" was odd, didn't seem to be about that at all. The following secular perspective was much more readable, but instead of being about "Islam in the Modern World" in general as titled, it's primarily about perennialism and Sheikh Nazim's Naqshbandi Sufi order. Since Nazim lived in Cyprus and did outreach to non-Muslims in London, it's easy to infer that the author had been a student of his, but oddly he doesn't say.

In the end, he writes "the aim of the book" was to "offer arguments for [leaving Islam] and provide the intellectual basis on which it can be done." It's disingenuous, I think, not to have said that in the introduction (or title). I would have liked the book to have been entirely about what the title promised.

There's also an appendix on the number 19 theory of Rashad Khalifa, late founder of the Quran-only/anti-Hadith sect now called "The Submitters." This is somewhat interesting, but seems to have been included not so much because of any thematic relation than because he feels it's an argument in favor of the human creation of the Quran. Interesting and quite useful

Let me disabuse Fred Donner of the notion that author Ibn al-Rawandi is the same person as Ibn Warraq (author of Why I Am Not a Muslim and Quest for the Historical Muhammad, among innumerable other scholarly titles on Islam). The assertion is false, even preposterous --- and a good indication that Fred Donner has read neither of these authors.

Ibn Warraq (whom I'm honored to call friend) has never claimed any association with Sufism, and in each of his many volumes takes a much tougher and more agnostic view of central Islamic theological points than Ibn Al-Rawandi. Ibn Warraq frequently focuses on the violent and warlike features of Islam, and passages in sacred texts that incite such jihad and violence. Al-Rawandi, while skeptical, is also nostalgic.

There are some similarities between the two: both were horrified by Ayatollah Khomeini's 1989 Islamic fatwa seeking Salman Rushdie's death for having written his novel Satanic Verses. Both are self-described ex-Muslims. And obviously, since Ibn al-Rawandi thanks Ibn Warraq for his encouragement, they do know one another and converse.

One enlightening difference, however, is Al-Rawandi's effort to explain, albeit sometimes in the quotations of others, how it is that Muslims perceive their belief and that of others. According to a citation of Frithjof Schuon (the subject of subsequent criminal prosecution and much controversy) --- which comes closest to anything I've seen to describing the "reality" --- is the "curious tendency [of the average Muslim] to believe that non-Muslims either know that Islam is the truth and reject it out of pure obstinacy, or else are simply ignorant of it and can be converted by elementary explanations..." The idea that anyone can in good conscience oppose Islam "quite exceeds the Muslim's imagination precisely because," to him, Islam is entirely coincident with "the irresistible logic of things."

To average Muslims, then, "no explanations are necessary," and indeed, no probing or doubtful questions are allowed or to be tolerated. To Islamic believers, not believing is "not like failing to turn up in church on Sunday," but rather akin to "a traitorous act in time of war." It's making an alliance with an enemy "for whom no good word can be said, an act for which the only appropriate penalty is death."

Furthermore, by way of explaining the appeal of Islam to some conservative intellectual Westerners (who take a romantic view of "The East" and Arabs) "Islam is in fact the last refuge," as they wish "that the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, in short the 'modern world,' had never come about."

Al-Rawandi is also refreshingly skeptical about Sufism, which far too many Westerners believe to be a "kinder, gentler" form of Islam. This supposedly mystical counter-movement, however, is in the author's words "as much a late construct resulting from the Arabs' acquiring an empire as Islam itself." And like Islam itself, Sufism is also "heavily dependent on hadith qudsi, supposedly direct sayings of God not included in the Koran," That is to say, it is antithetical to logical reasoning and fully dependent on total acceptance of Islamic doctrine and an entire tradition without definitive evidence of any kind.

This book is not at all like the works of Ibn Warraq, except that it offers the willing reader much additional material as to encourage healthy skepticism of Islam, and particularly its mystical incarnations.

A Note to the Reader

Ibn Al-Rawandi ...died more than a thousand years ago. Ibn Al-Rawandi the author of this book lives today, As a matter of fact he dedicated the book to his mother 1903-, and inside the book he discussed the views of modern - twentieth century - thinkers as P. Crone and M. Cook who published a book together 1980's, and probably the author assumed the alias Ibn Al-rawandi for himself. To clear the Matter to the reader I add the following two notes:
Ibn Al-Rawandi( 9th century):
The moslem notion that the Koran, no one can produce like it and also - this came later by moslem theoligians - the Koran is as eternal as Allah itself and therefore was not created. was rejected by Nazzam a famous reasonable moslem theologian who was by no means secular. Nazzam saw that notion is damaging to islam especially among the intellectuals, so he said that the Arabs contemporary of Mohammad were able to write like Koran. But he then maintained that Allah stopped the Arabs from doing so as a proof to his prophet. This last statement by Nazzam is not strictly true, for some Arab contemporary to the prophet Mohammad did compose like Koran and their works was destroyed when Islam became dominant. Pierce Brown is the New York Times bestselling author of Red Rising and Golden Son. While trying to make it as a writer, Brown worked as a manager of social media at a startup tech company, toiled as a peon on the Disney lot at ABC Studios, did his time as an NBC page, and gave sleep deprivation a new meaning during his stint as an aide on a U.S. Senate campaign. Devilishly-plotted political thriller -- much better than RED RISING

Pierce Brown's GOLDEN SON is the second installment in his "Red Rising Trilogy," a series of novels set in a dystopian future where a genetically-engineered elite is ruling the universe. Brown's premise is that future humanity has been divided into color-coded castes, with the super-strong, super-beautiful "Golds" at the top of the hierarchy. Beneath them, the other Colors fill a variety of pre-ordained roles (including police, doctors, entertainers, scholars, and laborers), all in the service of the all-powerful Golds. In the first installment of the series, RED RISING, 18-year-old Darrow, a common Red laborer from the mines of Mars, is recruited by a secret revolutionary group called the Sons of Ares to go undercover as a Gold in an attempt to destroy the Society from the inside. Darrow is physically and genetically altered by a "Carver" so that he can pass for a Gold, and he is accepted at one of their prestigious schools to begin training to become one of the elite Peerless Scared - the hope is that once he rises to the top of his class, he can be instrumental in tearing the system down. As GOLDEN SON begins, two years have passed since the events of RED RISING. Darrow, now 20, has been accepted by ArchGovernor Augustus and is set to begin further training in the art of War at the Academy. He has heard nothing from the Sons of Ares, and is unsure of his role in the revolution - and even if the revolution still exists. The first few chapters of GOLDEN SON are very much like the second half of RED RISING - lots of wargames as Darrow continues his "studies" and attempts to one-up his ruthless competition. But once the novel really gets going, it evolves into an intense, devilishly-plotted political thriller that sheds a harsh light on the nature of humanity.

I wasn't a big fan of RED RISING - too much senseless violence as Brown's group of killer teens battle each other for power and position. In a way, RED RISING is like one long Hunger Games, with kids backstabbing, plotting, and killing each other in a race to be the one who rises to victory. But GOLDEN SON delivers what RED RISING only promised. Once Darrow leaves the Academy to take his position in Augustus's house, the games become much more serious. Suddenly, he's very much in demand in a world of desperate factions, each trying to get the jump on the rest. Augustus wants to use him to further his own political ambitions, his son Adrius (or the "Jackal") wants to use him to establish his own ascendency, and the Sons of Ares resurface with deadly plans of their own. The Bellona family wants Darrow's head (as well as the Governorship), the Sovereign wants to manipulate him, and even his closest friends can't be trusted. And while all this is going on, Darrow's own family of lowly Reds is still slaving away in the tunnels beneath Mars, believing Darrow is dead. Where do his loyalties really lie? Is he still committed to the dream his lovely young wife died for, or have his eyes been opened to realities she never knew existed?

What works best in GOLDEN SON is Darrow himself, who must weigh all of the things he learns as an undercover Gold in an attempt to determine his own future, and that of his Society. And he learns a lot. The Jackal insists, "I'm going to help these ambitious lowColors move up, for a price." He says, "I need a warlord. I'll be Odysseus. You be Achilles." The Sons of Ares tell Darrow, "Good men die. To free them, to protect them, we must be savages." The corrupt and ruthless Sovereign tells him, "You cannot bend the worlds to fit your morals." But Darrow's own conscience tells him that victory is not worth the murder of millions. Augustus claims he would be a more benevolent leader, one who would work to unite the Colors rather than further divide them. But he, too, is hiding secret ambitions that have nothing to do with change and everything to do with maintaining a system that rewards the Golds at a cost of all those beneath them.

The central message of Brown's trilogy isn't hard to decipher. As Darrow puts it, "It's not about our Color; it's about our hearts." He accepted his role as a pawn of the Sons of Ares because of his love for Eo, his 16-year-old wife who martyred herself to inspire a revolution. And her sacrifice - and her dream of a better future for all of the so-called lowColors - is what keeps him focused through much of the book. But he also loves Mustang, the ArchGovernor's feisty, rebellious daughter, although he keeps her at arm's length. She's a Gold, and he's a Red. They are Romeo and Juliet, forbidden to love one another. Of course this Juliet doesn't know that the man she loves is actually a lowly Red, an unworthy slave so far beneath her in stature that they shouldn't even speak to one another much less love. This is the obstacle he fights in this novel, and it's a huge one.

I do recommend reading RED RISING before beginning GOLDEN SON. And be aware that this novel ends on a major cliff-hanger - there is no resolution, not even a temporary one. You will be desperate to read the third and final installment, and the wait may be long! Overall, this is a gripping, emotionally-charged story with grand themes and a protagonist who finds himself caught up in a political mess that may be impossible to unravel. Darrow says, early in the novel, "More and more do I believe the Sons of Ares chose the wrong man. I am not made for the cold war of politics." But it's this war - this insidious political maelstrom - that he must battle. He is a fighter, a killer even, but he's also a man with heart, a man with a vision of what the world could be if only the hierarchy were broken, if only people could be free. It's a great story. I highly recommend it.

I read this as quickly as I read the first one!

I read Red Rising in a matter of a few days and it was the same with Golden Son (which I picked up *immediately* after Red Rising).

A lot of the things I liked about Red Rising were present in Golden Son, as well. The raw emotion we saw in the first 20% of so of book one were here, too, although it was a little more spaced out and there wasn't quite as much of it. But every time I was becoming a little less invested in the story, there'd be one of those moments where Darrow (the POV character, if you haven't read book one) would remember why he was doing what he was doing, what he was fighting for, something about his past, etc., and I'd be pulled right back in.

I think characterization is a little uneven here, but that's the nature of any first-person POV book. Darrow is complex and intelligent and doesn't ever forget where he came from. However, he has conflicting emotions and he is most definitely NOT infallible. And he's walking a tight line -- he needs the support of his high-status (Gold) patron, but his own feelings tend towards "demokratic" (to use the spelling from the book). There are some revelations about certain characters in the book that almost make me want to go back and read Red Rising again with this additional knowledge, to see if there were subtle clues in their behavior that pointed towards future events.

One thing this book has going for it is that the villains who play main roles in the story are not one-dimensional. And you don't always know they're villains, until it's too late. Trust is a big issue here -- Darrow wants to trust people but sometimes chooses the wrong allies, sometimes shuts out people he shouldn't. But he also makes some decisions to trust people, especially people with lower social status (lets a Blue captain his ship, lets an Orange give him advice with respect to throwing off enemies, gives a Stained man a weapon traditionally used only by the nobility) that I think will be important in book three. (If you haven't read book one, various social classes have colors and pretty much everything they are allowed to do or not do is dictated by what color a person is born into. Darrow was born a Red -- a low working class -- but has been altered to appear a Gold, the ruling class.)

The weak point, I think, is that this is a very similar book to Red Rising. What was carried out on the ground with castles, among students, was transferred to ships in space. The same rivalries and many of the same characters were back. (On the plus side, the same narrative structure of defeat followed by victory followed by defeat was in place, and that really worked. Pierce Brown doesn't really ever take EVERYTHING away from his heroes, even when things are looking pretty grim. There's always some way out. I hate reading about defeats for characters I've come to care about, but I know that if I get through them, some triumph -- even a small one -- is sure to come soon. So even though the book did not end on a happy note for me -- and it was somewhat of a cliffhanger, for people who hate such things -- I have hopes for the outcome after volume three, and wish I didn't have to wait for it!)

This series is shaping up to be a rather typical hero's journey, I think. It has a fair amount in common (overall structure wise, though not with respect to individual events) with the original Star Wars trilogy. I sometimes get bored with such stories, but the writing style (present tense, too, which usually bothers me but I don't even notice it here), the emotion, the action, and the ups and downs really all worked together to keep me interested.

I would not start the series with this book. Not only will you learn so much more about the characters, the world of the story, etc., when you read about them in book one, but Red Rising is really an entertaining book in its own right and you won't want to miss out on that.

A seriously stellar followup to Red Rising.

Right. SO . . . after finishing Golden Son did I:

A. Shriek incomprehensibly. Over and over (and over) again.
B. Sit in a semi-comatose state staring at NOTHING for an indefinite period of time.
C. Explain (in detail) to my poor mother (whom I was visiting) EXACTLY what my problem was, despite her having never read either book from this series, and thus being unable to understand what I was ranting about.

(That was a rhetorical question. Obviously, I did them ALL.)

Pierce Brown, (handsome) devil that he is, lured us in a false sense of security in Red Rising. He taught us that, yes, Bad Things would happen---LOTS of Bad Things would happen---but by the end, we'd have found our feet. We'd know that there was more coming---and HOORAY for that---but the individual installment would be resolved.
