About the Author
Stephen Smoke is the author of 20 novels, including Black Butterfly, Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Blues, Trick of the Light, The Prince of Palos Verdes, and Cathedral of the Senses under his own and other names. He has also written 8 non-fiction books. Stephen has written and directed feature films, including “Street Crimes” (starring Dennis Farina) and “Final Impact,” and has written screenplays for others, including “Magic Kid.” In 2011 he published the first novel with its own embedded soundtrack: Cathedral of the Senses. The songs on that album were written by Stephen and recorded mainly by musicians and singers living in Sedona. All the songs are available for download via iTunes, Amazon, and other popular music download sites. In July of 2012 Stephen re-released this novel, Trick of the Light, which is the prequel to Cathedral of the Senses. In 1989 he recorded an album (in support of the Trick of the Light novel) on which several well-known musicians, including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Garth Hudson (the keyboard player for The Band), played on various tracks. The new edition of this novel was released in softcover and eBook formats, plus an enhanced multimedia version of Trick of the Light for the iPad. The enhanced edition contains portions of the songs embedded at appropriate points in the novel. The songs are available at all popular music download sites. Amazing!

Trick of the Light is very captivating. It's interesting and very poignant. The characters are believable and very endearing. The fact in fantasy concept hooked me and kept me reading. The search for answers and the elusive Chris Justice took me on my own spiritual journey and made me ask myself what all my beliefs and conceptions really mean to me. I love this book so much, I plan to read it again. It's a spritual and trippy experience.

A novel journey into an expanding illumination

Trick of the Light is an intriguing shifting journey that mixes contemporary ideas of character, place, with subtle suspenseful metaphysical themes that kept me turning pages. Thank you Mr. Smoke, for the experience, and the chance to see mystical ideas through a unique lens. It is well told story that I will share with as many friends. I Look forward to reading the next book "Cathedral of the Senses"

The Way We Should Be Doing It

This book offers several strategies to up-regulate insulin and keep diabetes or pre-diabetes in check. Hopefully without medication. Yes, as Mary Lane said, it is a lot like Dr. Fuhrman. So are a lot of other books. Fuhrman didn't invent "eat lots of veg". Unlike Fuhrman, though, this book allows protein in small amounts with every meal. Fuhrman hides behind his veganism. He is also a one-trick pony, in that he thinks all our cures can be done with food alone. His exercise program is basically non-existent. Dr. King applies his strategies equally and talks about things like brown fat that can help burn fat. There's a lot of information in this book that's different from other views. But basically (dietwise) it's the same as others who believe in very low fat, moderate veg, lighter protein and plenty of fiber. Fiber is his big push when it comes to food. I have learned a lot from Dr. Fuhrman's way of eating but I will never be (almost completely) vegan, as he suggests. Nor do I think it's necessary. Dr. King's diet is a basic, no-nonsense plan that makes sense for me. He validates, for me, Dr. Fuhrman and others who believe in increased fiber. Where Dr. King parts ways with Dr. Fuhrman is in the several other strategies implemented (including modest amounts of protein daily) to get rid of diabetes (and high blood pressure, as long as you're at it).

Great book that is easy to use in everyday life!!!

Finally, a common sense approach to healthy living written for regular people like myself. This is a great book that tells you how to eat a healthy diet that is also delicious, meaning it will help you develop lasting habits. The goals and strategies are all easy to adapt to your everyday life- daily walks, eat more good carbohydrates (vegetables, legumes, fruits), mental relaxation techniques. The best part of the book is that it introduces you to an easy and delicious way to eat healthy- the RAD diet, aka Rural Asian Diet. This is so much easier and more sustainable b/c it tastes good. Traditional diets with a ton of restrictions are so hard to keep going.

I received this book as a gift from Dr. George King to help me in my continuing struggle to control my Type 2 high blood glucose. I read with interest Dr. George King's proposed 8 core strategies and a life time road map for a comprehensive blood glucose management plan.
Knowledge is power. Strategy is a plan to achieve a specific goal. In this book "The Diabetes Reset", I found both the scientific knowledge (based on Joslin Diabetes Center research and other diabetes research findings) and 8 strategies such as trying the Rural Asian Diet (RAD), attempting to achieve a 5 to 7 percent weight loss, doing more aerobic exercise/strength training,activating our "brown fat" to burn calories, reducing inflammation, getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep, reducing stress and managing mental health, ingesting more foods rich in "phase 2 antioxidants".
This book is very helpful to me and many other persons with diabetes. I also found the content of this this book a source of inspiration, encouragement and hope. Thank you Dr. George King for sharing scientific knowledge, research findings, and strategies for meeting the diabetes challenges. I give the book a five stars.

John Robinson is Vice President and Director of International Conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society and is the editor, with K. H. Redford, of Neotropical Wildlife Use and Conservation. He has written extensively on tropical forest conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.Elizabeth Bennett is Senior Conservation Zoologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society and is the author of more than fifty scientific and popular articles on wildlife and conservation in Malaysia. Her writings include The Natural History of Orang-Utan and, with F. Gombek, Proboscis Monkeys of Borneo.

Beyond Arm Chair Conservation

For anyone interested in wildlife conservation and habitat destruction - this book is a must read! The crisis in bushmeat in Africa is mounting - and among other things this book gives the reader a view from the inside, on the ground in Africa.

Good introduction and conclusion, but otherwise less than the sum of its parts

This book examines the potential for sustainable hunting in tropical rainforests. It's an important question, since these forests face the threat of being cut down, their wildlife hunting out of existence, and their people turned into urban slum-dwellers. Though the editors give it the old college try, however, this book doesn't really succeed in telling us how to improve the prospects for sustainable hunting in such cases, to say nothing of dealing with the external threats such as deforestation, global warming, and urbanization and industrialization.

The introduction is really very good, and usefully explores the key question of sustainable hunting. The authors are very careful to think about analytical categories and definitions, and they make a strong case that we need to consider the social context of hunting: traditional hunting versus hunting with modern technology, sport hunting versus hunting out of necessity, and subsistence hunting versus commercial hunting.

The conclusion, also written by the editors, also makes a very helpful contribution. The core of the conclusion summarizes in about 50 points the main conclusions of the contributors. These are organized by categories such as the social-cultural, institutional, and economic influences on sustainable hunting in tropical forests.

Unfortunately, what makes the conclusion helpful is what weakens the book as a whole. It lacks a strong analytical framework or theory, which forces the authors to cobble everything together at the end. It consists overwhelmingly of single cases, with no apparent attention to case selection issues. The authors of each chapter give no evidence of having read the other chapters, even those on the same topic. The editors work valiantly to summarize the findings, but these are pure summaries of facts not attempts to bring them together and make sense of the patterns.

The book also does not make many concessions to other scholars who don't do the same kind of work, whether biological or economic modeling for example. The book is very ethnographic and anthropological in its sensibility, even in those chapters written by biologists. In addition, most of the chapters are not very policy oriented, despite the apparent focus of the book. (In fairness, some studies of the Congo explicitly consider possible policy responses, as do a few other chapters.)

In sum, I was impressed by the editors' written contributions but it's evident that they were unable to whip their contributors into shape. There are a *lot* of contributors - - 1000 pages spread among 25 chapters - - so that makes much of the book a long slog in details about this or that forest scattered around the world.

Lottman's biography of Jules Verne dwells on the sources of the pioneering author's creative impulses, drawing a portrait of a complicated man, driven by an insatiable wanderlust that led him to uproot his staid life in Paris, to move to the hinterlands where he recreated himself as a writer of captivating stories of science fiction, a genre he virtually created. Drawing from Verne's previously unpublished correspondence, Lottman provides revealing details about Verne's life, his worries for his troubled son Michel, and the relationship with his domineering publisher and editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel, all of which provides new insight into Verne and his written work. Perhaps most fascinating is the close relationship between the success of Verne's work and the innovative marketing of his novels by Hetzel, showing that Verne was not only creating new genres, but also blazing trails as a literary media star.

When nearly 70 in 1897 (he died in 1905), Verne observed, "I'm working steadily as always, functioning like a machine, and I don't let the furnace cool." Such deskbound industry doesn't make for animated biography, but Lottman's "exploratory biography" of the French novelist is for readers captivated by such works as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth and other imaginary voyages. Verne produced so many books that few are up to the prophetic From the Earth to the Moon or to Around the World in Eighty Days, and after the latter, the real Nellie Bly would compete with the creations of the printed page. The novels' sheer quantity requires that Lottman's references to them, and to their origins, occupy much of the book. Still, this first biography of Verne in English in many years has some surprises for his fans. For example, he was primarily a mental traveler. Aside from using his beloved sailboat, he voyaged hardly at all, and traveled aloft only once?years after his Five Weeks in a Balloon. Much of his fiction was not only ill-paying?Lottman (Camus) is informative on Verne's contracts and earnings?but for marketing reasons endured drastic rewriting by his publisher. Yet he refused entreaties to moderate his passionate anti-Semitism, which hardly harmed his sales in a France that was soon to frame Dreyfus. The father of the modern novel of anticipatory science, Verne flagged at times, as he was contractually bound to publish two novels a year, but he gave armchairs wings?and fins. Lottman's (The French Rothchilds LJ 4/1/95) readable biography for nonspecialists intersperses a narrative of Verne's life (1828-1905) with pieces of his works, including Paris in the Twentieth Century (LJ 11/15/96). Rejected by publisher Hetzel in 1863, and not published until 1994, this demoralizing account of a suicide in 1860, out of place in the progressive liberalism of the time and eerily appropriate for the late 1990s, remains an anomaly in Verne's corpus. By and large, Lottman avoids psychological analysis, sociohistorical context, and biographical links, thus omitting the more adventuresome and provocative readings Verne's work has received since the late 1970s. His own documentation takes advantage of French Verne scholarship and singularly ignores the extensive American and British scholarship. Using his own translations, he accordingly ignores also the extensive scholarship triggered by the current retranslation renaissance. Publication timing has caused him to miss the indispensable Jules Verne Encyclopedia (ed. by Brian Taves and others, Scarecrow, 1996). In-depth biography of Verne

This book is meticulously researched, with 20 pages of footnotes, based on the correspondence of Verne, his family, and his business associates, along with contemporary accounts. I knew of Verne only from his famous novels: "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," Journey to the Center of the Earth," etc. I did not know the range of fiction that he wrote, much of it NOT related to these science fiction stories. From the biography, we learn of the substantial contributions his publisher, Pierre-Jules Hetzel made in making Verne's books marketable and palatable. Many chapters are dedicated to a discussion of what went into Verne's books, including what sparked the idea and a summary of the plot, plus the biographer's opinion regarding the quality of the story. Some of the books were adapted for the stage, which was an important source of income for Verne. The author goes into great deal regarding Verne's health problems, the reluctant financial supported proved by his father, the challenges posed by his son, and Verne's prejudices. Due to the way the book is based on source materials, and provides endless details, it was tedious to read at times. There is a growing sense of repetition from chapter to chapter because of Verne's concerns about his son, his health issues, and his back-and-forth correspondence with his publisher. I was disappointed that the book did not have a list of the novels and plays that Verne wrote, as this would have been a helpful reference. Overall, the biography was a solid one, just not especially inspiring to read.

Survey of author's life, work and times

This book starts out well, with a chatty informal style that promises to give you both a standard biography of a major author, but also the biographer's interesting asides. Unfortunately, that promising beginning is not carried through in this book, as it quickly declines into a standard-issue chronology without much insight. It's quite repetitious, too, though this can be perhaps be the fault of the subject himself, who constantly complained about stomach ailments and who was ridiculously prolific (thus tempting a biographer to give short summaries of book after book after book). It's no exaggeration to say there are at least 100 references to Verne's stomach complaints in his letters to family and friends. And since he wrote 100-plus books, it's no exaggeration to say that there are about 100 times when we get a book title, a plot summary and then are told that the book was serialized in one magazine or another and then bound into an illustrated edition for the Xmas holiday sales season.

But back to the actual subject: Jules Verne. He created a new type of literature, or at least perfected it. A blend of science, historic travelogue and fiction, Verne's best books educated children and adults while also entertaining them. He researched his topics meticulously, but then layered on top of them wild scenarios that brought his heroes and villains into those worlds, where the skills of the hero (and usually a trusted servant or colleague) would eventually save the day. It was formulaic, and it rarely earned much praise from the intelligensia of the day, but it sold well for decades.

The locations of these tales was literally everywhere in the world and occasionally beyond earth. But his favorites were the North Pole, South Pole and the ocean. He could evoke the scary depths of these uncharted and dangerous places, while also sharing with readers whatever new knowledge was emerging about their topography, weather, geology, flora, fauna and human habitation. And whether his heroes arrived by boat, train, balloon, on foot or some other means, they always carried with them just enough modern technology and engineering savvy so that they could scrape together a new contraption. As the biographer notes, this fired up the imagination of countless explorers and scientists for generations.

I must admit, however, that I find his books to be dreary. They're basically lists, punctuated by stock characters doing obvious things. In fact, I picked up this biography hoping that it would inspire me to re-read a few of his books. Not gonna happen.

This biographer does a good job of delving into Verne's life and politely asking some provocative questions. Were his stomach ailments real? Did he cheat on his wife -- and with women or with teenage boys? Why did he allow his publisher to continually lengthen a very unfair contract that deprived Verne of a share of the profits of illustrated editions? Why did he leave Paris at the height of his fame and move to the provincial town of Amiens for the rest of his life?

And the biographer places him in context of his times, which were very interesting, including rapid and violent changes in the French govt. several times during his lifetime. Verne was a religious man (Catholic) and deeply conservative politically. He politely, but firmly, was one of those guys trying to hold back the dam of political progress, even as he celebrated technological progress in his books.

Yet, the book is still lacking something. It doesn't give a truly deep dive into how Verne actually put together his research and his fantastical ideas into a book. We are told that he always had two or three books in progress, and that he rewrote and edited his drafts many times, always with deep consultation with his editor and publisher. But we don't really understand how he did it, other than some weird system of writing in pencil and then writing over it in pen when he had finished the first draft. In a book-length biography, we would have been better served with a full chapter on his technique.

Similarly, we would have been better served to have a deeper look at a few of his most lasting works: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea; Around the World in 80 Days; etc. These do get lengthier treatment in the book, but the treatment is more about their acclaim and the theatrical productions that "80 Days" spawned than about what made the books special.

In the end, this book is a helpful grounding in Verne's life and times. But I'm not sure it really told me what make Jules Verne special.

Great book even better teacher!

This book is so informative and made me feel ready for the exam. I was lucky enough to have Mr.Sullivan as my AP teacher and he knew exactly how to use the book. It comes with cute diagrams and funny little tid-bits that allow long boughs of reading which I found problems with in many other books. BUY THIS BOOK!

Greg Noonan was a pioneer in home-brewing methodology, an acclaimed brewing author, a co-founder of one of the first brewpubs in New England, an innovator in professional brewing techniques and a truly great publican. He opened theVermont Pub and Breweryin Burlington, VT in 1988 after getting the legislature to pass a bill to accommodate the concept of brewpubs. Good resource

Lagers are a difficult style: the most authentic producers don't bother importing to the US. The Americans that emulate the Pilsners Marzens and Helles won't ever hone in on those beautiful malty flavors.

Lagers are hard to do because maltiness is hard to capture. Once you have one though, preferably for longer than a 3 day binge in Germany, you start to realize what you're missing.

I don't think this resource can give you everything you need, but its certainly a start in the right direction. As a brewer, you won't be able to go completely down this road without the help of someONE- not a text, because the best trade techniques are not written but passed down.

More scientific explanations of the brewing process, and a good book for any brewer to own. Many books give too cursory of an brewing explanation, and while this may be a bit too detailed -- it is a great companion to Gordon Strong's Brewing Better Beer.

If you've read Papazian and Palmer already, this may be the next logical choice. Far more technically oriented than the other two, Noonan lays out the plan for decoction mashing after going in-depth with malt, water chemistry and treatment, yeast and fermentation. While the chapter with step-by-step instructions for decoction mashing is the clearest and most direct I've read, the book as a whole is a fantastic reference for brewing techniques in general and lager techniques in particular. A staple of any good brewing library.

It is a heritage on the one hand from the seventeenth-century political arithmeticians and the later moral statisticians who believed that quantification would provide the basis for a dispassionate analysis of social affairs; and on the other hand from the nineteenth-century post-Enlightenment social philosophers who were eager to develop an empirical science of society that would enable them to control social conduct – just as the physical sciences had provided the knowledge to tame nature. Yet every debate about the relation between positivism and sociology is clouded by the diversity of uses of the term 'positivism' – uses that are so varied that some can pronounce positivism dead while others find it still the vital force that dominates sociology.

The particular merit of Peter Halfpenny's book is that it makes this diversity of uses its central theme. In order to provide a clear basis from which to assess controversial questions about the contribution of the positivist traditions to sociology, the book reviews twelve different important uses of the term 'positivism' that have emerged at different times since the mid-nineteenth century, when Auguste Comte coined both 'positivism' and 'sociology'. This review is conducted by examining the historical development of the two independent roots of modern sociological positivism – positivist philosophy and statistics – and by analysing logical positivist philosophy, which in many ways defined the course of twentieth century philosophy of the social (as well as the natural) sciences.

About the Author

Professor David G. I. Scott is a Consultant Rheumatologist Norfolk and Norwich University Foundation NHS Trust, and an Honorary Professor at the University of East Anglia.

Dr Richard A. Watts qualified from Oxford University Medical School in 1982. He undertook general medical training at the Whittington Hospital, London. In 1988, he was appointed research fellow in the Department of Rheumatology University College London where he undertook research and wrote his doctoral thesis on the idiotypic specificity of human monoclonal anti-DNA antibodies. He has held posts at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, and Ipswich Hospital. Dr Watts has been a Trustee of the British Society for Rheumatology and Chair of the organizing committee of the annual scientific meeting. He was editor in chief of Rheumatology between 2002 and 2008. He is lead editor of the Oxford Textbook of Rheumatology.
