About the Author
Susan F. Carson is a professor of education in the College of Education at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Carson’s scholarship and research focuses include the implementation of peace education in urban K-12 schools, social justice and peace education with a multicultural emphasis, and peace and justice studies in international education. She developed a model program with Kent School Services Network (a social service network with 21 organizations and six school districts), teaching undergraduate students at identified schools serving homeless youth. Dr. Carson’s 2010 Fulbright Award to research “Principles and Practices of Caring Communities: Women’s Participation in the Public Spheres of Education in Contemporary India” demonstrated her effectiveness as a cross-cultural educator and negotiator. Her international research in peace education has included work with the University of Education, Padagogische Hochschule Schwabisch Gmund, Germany; Lucknow University, Lucknow, India; the University of Cape Coast, Ghana; the Northern Council for Integrated Education in Belfast; and the Consultores Associados in Uberaba, Brazil.

What a Delightful Book!

Every once in awhile I run across a book that is so much more than even its author perhaps envisioned. This book is one of those rare treats — a brief and lovely read that uses personal narratives as a way to explore caring and the potential for peace in today’s world.
The author, Dr. Susan Carson, believes that storytelling can become a powerful tool for change in the hands of those who understand how to use it effectively. A dedicated educator of teachers and a gifted teacher herself, by sharing inspiring stories of real people who overcame adversity, Carson shows us how to use narratives inside and outside the classroom.
In addition to the individual stories, Carson helps the reader understand how each narrative fits within a larger context. For instance, Isaiah’s story is presented within the greater context of the criminal justice system, where so many minority males discover they are permanently excluded from the rest of society. Hannah’s story of proactively confronting her mental illness and finding her own path to wellness illustrates the capabilities each of us have to take responsibility for our life and health, in spite of a severely flawed mental health system. And John’s story of overcoming the challenge of growing up in an orphanage, rising to play football at the Big Ten level, acquiring a Ph.D. and founding an orphanage of his own provides inspiration to each of us; we can, indeed, become something greater than our origins would seem to dictate.
Carson’s book will appeal to all teachers, as well as students of philosophy, comparative religion, divinity, teacher education, peace studies and anyone interested in a purposeful life. Buy it for yourself, buy it for your students, buy it for your friends. 5-Stars.
