Koko Solves Another Case
By J.E. Stephens
Jim Qwilleran, or Qwill, has recently left the big city to move to the city of Pickax in Moose County. Life is good. He is decorating a new space and has a lovely young decorator who seems to making plays for him. This is causing problems for Qwill's relationship with Polly Duncan, the town librarian.

Qwill joined the local theatre group. The play practice is going smoothly until one of the actors is murdered with his wife. Qwill begins to investigate the murder and finds out many new details about Pickax residents and Moose County.

The Cats, Koko and Yum Yum, begin to act strangely. Little does Qwill know they are working behind the scenes to solve a crime and repair a relationship.

I enjoyed this Lilian Jackson Braun novel. I plan to read them all. If you like enjoyable mysteries with cats you will love this book.

Son of the Stars (Winston Science Fiction Book 8), by Raymond F. Jones

"This person is not even human. It's impossible for me to diagnose the injury or illness of such a structure as his!" With these words and a worried frown, Doc Smithers sums up the case of the strange creature that lay on Ron Barron's bed. For the boy, Clonar, is like nothing earth's medical books have ever cataloged. And the day Ron Barron found him, staggering away from the wrecked metal disk that lay hidden near Longview, is one that put earth's existence in jeopardy!

In SON OF THE STARS, Raymond Jones has written of a forthright friendship between a young castaway from space and his earthly counterpart. How a cold and suspicious military, recognizing Clonar only as an alien from an astonishingly advanced civilization, turns friendship into treachery that threatens earth's existence, makes this an electrifying story with a thought-provoking theme. In scenes uncomfortably vivid, you'll meet soldiers and citizens of a typical American city; people like calculating General Gillispie and frightened Mrs. Barron, whose reactions to an "interplanetary" situation bring the world to the brink of destruction.

Clonar's words, "They're coming to destroy your world!" refer to a planet whose wars and strife might shortly spread to other worlds. Climaxed with a scene of power and drama unmatched in science fiction, SON OF THE STARS is a breath-taking book you won't put down until the very last page - and won't be able to forget until men reach the stars and learn for themselves!

The Kindness of Strangers
By Paul Camp
_Son of the Stars_ (1952) by Raymond F. Jones was one of 36 juveniles published by Winston in the 1950s. It was common practice for Winston to have their authors write factual forewards or afterwards to their novels. Presumably the notion was that these would help to make them "respectable" to parents and librarians, though I suspect that most librarians didn't need that kind of trickery.

Richard Marsten's _Danger: Dinosaurs!_ (1953) had an essay on an imaginary time-slip and history. Chad Oliver's _Mists of Dawn_ (1952) had a detailed introduction to anthropology. Lester del Rey, in _Marooned on Mars_ (1952), discussed the history of the "Martian canals" in astronomy and speculated about the possibility of life on Mars. Jack Vance's _Vandals of the Void_ (1953) predicted that we would enter a future age of piracy. Philip Latham explained how he used some out-of-date astronomy as a basis for creating fictional life in _Missing Men of Saturn_ (1953).

Raymond F. Jones's essay was a tribute to the "back-yard scientists of America" (v):

A ten-year-old boy in Texas begins the search by producing rotten-egg gas with his Christmas chemistry set. At sixteen, he has a well-equipped basement laboratory. A girl in Oregon is astonished at the wonder of her first glimpse through a microscope in junior high. When she enters college, she takes her laboratory with her-- a box containing her own microscope and a few hundred slides. (v)

This topic is one that seems to run through much of Jones's writing. Like Hal Clement, Jones likes to write about scientists-- both professional and amateur-- who engage in the great game of experimentation and observation. At one point, the alien boy Clonar (who knows how to build a transmitter that can communicate over light-years) touches the hero's short-wave radio and says, "It must be-- fun, anyway" (52). Clonar is being polite, but he is also telling the truth. Science _is_ fun. It's not so much the level of technology that your culture may have that counts. It's how well you play the game. Ultimately, it is decided that Earth must learn to make her own way-- both scientifically and morally.

Why morally? Because Clonar is an alien who crash lands on Earth. He is dependent upon the kindness of strangers. He gets it from some people-- the backyard inventer hero, his girlfriend, a crusty country doctor, and an intelligent collie. But often, he does not. The hero's mother is frightened of him. He is arrested by the military. Some of the military (like Colonel Middleton) are unimaginative and paranoid. Others (like General Gillispie) are more intelligent but overly ambitious. The hero's father is tolerant of Clonar, but he has a tendency to believe what those in authority tell him is the truth. Earth people have potential and basic goodness, but they still have a long way to go.

If it is at all possible, get the first edition with the original cover by Alex Schomberg. It depicts a fleet of flying saucers gracefully sailing from a planet with a reddish sandy desert and a blue ocean toward Earth hanging prominently in the sky. But I have sometimes wondered... What is the planet in the foreground? Not the Moon. Not with an ocean. But a planet such as Venus or Mars wouldn't show the Earth as prominently in the sky. Mars wouldn't be likely to have an ocean. Given the scientific knowledge of the day, Venus might have an ocean. But it would also have been cloud-shrouded, hiding any view of outer space. Clonar's world is in another galaxy. So what is the world in the forground? Well, never mind. It's still a spectacular cover.

Changed my life
By A Small Change
This book was one that introduced me to the concept of encounters of the third kind. As in all the Winston series, The hero is a young boy/man who has defining coming of age discoveries which we get to learn as we go through their adventure. This is not the best in the series but affected me for the rest of my life.

Son of the Stars had throwaway dialogue that would stay with me because it became the base belief of how I saw myself in the world. I could do anything I put my mind to, even if I'd never seen it.

Ron is the high school kid that finds a crashed spaceship. In it is an alien teenager named Clonar he eventually befriends. At one point Ron asked Clonar if he’d like to drive his car. Ron briefly explained the controls of the car. In a few moments Clonar's skills seemed equal to Ron's.

“Is there anything you can't learn in 10 seconds flat?” said Ron.

“We are trained to do things this way.”

“How can you train to do something you don't even know you're going to be called upon to do?"

Clonar smiled. “It's like providing a workshop with every tool that may ever be needed instead of waiting until a given job comes along and then assembling the tools one by one. That is about the best analogy I can give.”

From then on, I would look at anything as fixable or learnable so built and did things i had never even attempted before.

Son of the Stars by Raymond F Jones is a science fiction novel written in the 1950’s

The story starts with Ron Barron, a backyard scientist and amateur radio ham looking for a meteorite that has fallen to earth in the mountains near his home. While he is looking for the meteorite with his dog he finds a flying saucer that crashed along with a young man of his age who is injured and requires medical help. With the help of his girlfriend Ann, Ron brings the injured person to his home and sends for the family doctor. The three of them learn the spaceman’s name is Clonar. Ron tells his family about Clonar, and Mrs. Barron becomes frightened and tells Ron to get rid of him. Ron’s father is asked to contact the military to see what can be done to help Clonar get back home.

Here the story takes the typical story line that anything that cannot be understood must be dangerous and must be destroyed or taken by the military. The authorities throw all kinds of roadblocks up to stop Clonar from contacting his people to get home, and try to force him to reveal the secretes of his flying saucer. Only after Ron makes a deal with the general in charge of the case, General Gillespie and Clonar, is Clonar allowed to contact his people. Clonar learns that the fleet of his ships is on the way to destroy the Earth because of being shot down.

Clonar is able to change the mind of the Fleet Commander to stop the destruction of the Earth. The fleet than sends a ship to Earth to pick up Clonar. When Clonar says goodbye to Ron, he tells him that there can be no communication between each other.
SON of the STARS is a breath-taking fast action story you won't want to put down until the very last page, and doesn’t end here, but continues in the sequel Planet of Light. I enjoyed every page of this book and made sure that I read the sequel to complete the story.

The Black Tulip (Oxford World's Classics), by Alexandre Dumas

A deceptively simple story and the shortest of Dumas's most famous novels, The Black Tulip (1850) weaves historical events surrounding a brutal murder into a tale of romantic love. Set in Holland in 1672, this timeless political allegory draws on the violence and crimes of history, making a case against tyranny and creating a symbol of justice and tolerance: the fateful tulipa negra.

The Song of the Flowers
By B. Morse
While The Black Tulip lacks the swashbuckling, derring-do adventures of the other Dumas novels I have read, it is every bit as enjoyable to read.

Beginning with the arrest of two brothers, deemed traitors to the throne, Dumas Holland-based story at least begins with as strong a conflict as his other more action-laced novels. But the story, while shifting focus to the Godson of one of the men arrested, concerns his passion and pursuit of the highly coveted black tulip, a strain of Holland's most popular horticultural export. Cornelius van Baerle, a man of comfortable means, is little concerned with his wealth, or with position; or at all suspicious of the papers left in his care by his Godfather prior to his arrest. M. van Baerle has but one pursuit, one goal, and one dream...to produce a flawless, rare black tulip.

Thus his downfall, as an avaricious neighbor,Isaac Boxtel, shares this dream, but for entirely different reasons. While Cornelius van Baerle cares not for the riches and fame associated with growing such a flower, Boxtel covets both and plots to eliminate his competition and abscond with the delicate blossom which will net him one hundred thousand florins, more than enough to live like the King himself.

M. van Baerle is, therefore, convicted of treason when Boxtel reveals the existence of the papers of va Baerle's godfather to the authorities, and M. van Baerle finds himself on the wrong side of prison bars.

However, the appearance of an unexpected love awakens passions in Cornelius to rival those he feels for the black tulip, and ignites a desire in him to share the possible wealth associated with the flower, simply to assure it's development and care.

Thus, the race is on to plant, grow, and deliver the black tulip to the Horticultural Society.

Dumas' writing skills are in fine form with this shorter novel, sparing none of the humor, grace, and elegance of other works of his I have indulged in. And while foils are left in scabbards, no plots to overthrow a corrupt Cardinal materialize, and revenge is not sought against the bad-guys...this novel is every bit as exciting.

A fine way to experience one of France's most prolific historical authors for the first time, or to further explore his catalogue of works.

Flower power
By Harry Hughes
This book is not to be recomended by those who want an exciting swashbuckling tale on a par with Dumas' incomparable musketeer stories. It is to this end that many reviewers and readers of this book leave with an unfriendly opinion of this book. Although it is Dumas' last book, it is in my opinion one of his best. It tells the heartwarming tale of Cornelius van Baerle who lives purely to try and cultivate the rare and wonderous black tulip. However when Cornelius' godfather is asassinated he, without knowing it, enters a dangerous game of cat and mouse with his jealous neighbour (and tulip fancier) Issac Boxtel who has seen Cornelius being given a letter by his godfather. To this end Cornelius is jailed whereupon he falls in love with Rosa, the beautiful daughter of his jailer. Rosa aids Cornelius to cultivate his tulip inside the jail and they eventually succeed only to have it cruely stolen by Boxtel. I wont ruin the ending by telling you what happens, suffice to say I feel that for the first time in his writing career Dumas wrote a "Happy ever after" ending which irritated me to some extent. I do love this book and it earns its place alongside Dumas' great novels, my main reason for loving it so much is its final lines, it is one of the greatest pieces of philosophy I have ever heard, but it is important to read the book to fully understand its meaning, I know it so well that I can reel it off the top of my head thus, " ... he wrote above his door these lines that Grotius had carved on the wall of his prison on the day of his escape: "Sometimes one has suffered enough to have the right never to say: I am too happy"
To me these words have a beautiful resonance that is not only lovely to think of but accurate as well, I feel that anyone who reads this book and fails to be moved, if by nothing else by the bathos of the denoument, then they have ultimately failed to appreciate the true beauty and skill of one of the finest novelists to ever pick up a writing implement. This book is a thing of beauty, perhaps the tulip itself is a simple microcosm of the book, to start off it appears to be nothing special, but in the hands of someone who is aware of its true worth it is as priceless as the world itself.

A Subtle Novel
By A Customer
A blend of politics, human psychology, subtle romance, and (both real and fictionalized) history. The beginning of the novel is interesting but a little dense and readers may get discouraged, especially as the sentences are fairly complex. However it gets much easier and flows much quicker when the story picks up with the introduction of Van Baerle and his neighbor. I encourage you to keep reading if you are interested in its following key points:
-- The characters are incredibly believable and have developed personalities that are realistically complex.
-- The depiction of tragedy, justice, despair are noteworthy.
-- The story is rich and flows smoothly.
-- It's an interesting look at the past, especially the politics and the references to the tulip-craze of Europe some hundreds of years ago. Even though it has fictional elements it still feels like you're holding a slice of the past in your hand.
-- I've always hated romances, but the love in this story is carefully drawn with a subtle touch and depicted with realism. Genuinely entertaining.
-- It's depiction of the ways that popular opinion can be swayed and deceived by politics, nationalism, and patriotism is chilling.
-- It simultaneously shows us human nobility and human pettiness.
When I first picked up this book I didn't expect much. When I finished it I realized how much the impression it made lasts with me.

Revolutions and the Revolutionary Tradition: In the West 1560-1991From Routledge

Revolutions presents eight European case studies including the English revolution of 1649, the French Revolution and the recent revolutions within the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe (1989-1991) and examines them not only in their specific political, economic and social contexts but also as part of the wider European revolutionary tradition. A chapter on the American Revolution is also included as a revolution which grew out of European expansionism and political culture. Revolutions brings together leading writers on European history, who make a major contribution to the controversial debate on the role of revolution in the development of European history. This is a truly comparative book which includes discussion on each of the following key themes:
* the causes of revolution, including the importance of political, social and economic factors
* the effects of political and philisophical ideas or ideology on the revolution
* the form and process of a revolution, including the importance of violence and popular support
* the outcome of revolution, both short-term and long-term
* the way revolution is viewed in history particularly since the collapse of Communism in Europe.

Permutations of the Tree: The 182 Gates of the Gra Tree of Life, by Rawn Clark

The ancient Kabbalists wrote of “permuting the Letters”, a process of combining pairs of Hebrew Letters with vowel sounds and uttering them to generate mystical and magical effects. Franz Bardon, in his book The Key to the True Quabbalah, wrote of combining the utterance of letter sounds with the creative imagination of color and feeling, also to generate mystical and magical effects. In this book, I describe a different approach — permuting the Tree itself. This also combines the Letters but instead of speaking the Letters, the practitioner becomes the Letters and thus “utters” them with their whole being. The traditional techniques of permuting the Letters require decades of study as a prerequisite and in Judaic Kabbalah they are the sole purview of men. On the other hand, the technique of Permuting the Tree that I present here is non-exclusive and does not require any foreknowledge of Kabbalistic terminology, philosophy, etc. The only thing required is your creative imagination. I present to you in these pages the Tree of Life stripped of all its jargon and transformed into a truly useable tool, a map of the structure of Being that will easily lead you along a journey into Self. The message of the Tree of Life is that there is One Self and every thing that exists is an aspect of The One Self. Furthermore, the One Self exists equally within each of the infinite number of things that exist. It says that every thing is directly connected through the immanence of the One Self. It says that each thing can find the infinite by merely looking within its own self. And, it says that there is no need for an intermediary, no need to rely upon what someone else sees . . .

Not an Easy Read but it is Worth it!
By Andras M. Nagy
Rawn Clark again goes where very few venture. His book is an attempt to improve/expand on the Quabbalistic masterpiece of Franz Bardons, "The Key to the True Quabbalah". Clark's work is unique and radiates expereience that very few author's can claim. I am glad with this purchase albeit I will be first to admit that I am slowly, digesting this book as it is not an easy read.

One of the most 'essentially meaningful' books in print
By Greg Palamas
With a most elegant economy of words Permutations of the Tree traces the entire "creation" of BE-ing from the "infinitely infinite, non-sequential" undifferentiated Crown into the infinitely finite particles of awareness-substance of Domain. In the tradition of the original Sepher Yetzirah, and not of the more recent second-hand re-inventions of Europe, Rawn introduces us to the Gra Tree of Life which expresses the perfect symmetrical Oneness manifest in every level of existence--rather than a disproportionate imbalance through corrupt fallen-ess or hierarchical dominance. Permutations of the Tree is not just a detached theory but an incredibly accessible "tour guide" for directly experiencing every nuance of the One-Self and its interconnected relationships among its various levels of being--immediately. You do not have to memorize somebody else's anthropomorphic psycho-dramas as in certain pathworkings, nor do you need to memorize Hebrew formulas or layers of symbols. Rawn provides a series of "landmarks" to point you toward the reality of each gate and path through direct perception of it within your own levels of being and thus you become the tree itself. The immediacy of such a simple and direct method may be too much for the complex personal self to bear so be on guard about over-complicating this direct access to your own essential Self.

As a piece of magical literature it is breathtaking how precise and densely meaningful the ideas transmitted in the Permutations of the Tree are. One sentence expresses what most books are still unable to after pages and pages of very baroque, anthropomorphic chatter. If we were living in a different age most of those Western Magic books on Qabalah of the past 150 years would quickly be forgotten and, like the Sepher Yetzirah, Permutations of the Tree would endure for centuries as a seminal text. Perhaps for those to whom it matters, it already is such a text.

A Practical Guide
By AJ
I have Sefer Yetzirah: The Book of Creation by Aryeh Kaplan and I find the book to be an essential companion. This book helps one understand this very complex concept by giving practical meditations to integrate the tree into one's personal awareness. Very useful and practical, much better than trying to understand the tree on a purely intellectual basis.

Melville Henry de Massue (styled the Marquis of Ruvigny and Raineval) produced, in this work, one of the great achievements on royal and noble genealogy. In it he traces all the living descendants of King Edward III as of the date of original publication, some 50,000 individuals with over 300,000 lines of descent between them. Included in the Roll are the names of all the crowned heads of Europe; of the majority of hereditary peers; of all the royal and princely houses of Europe; of many of the higher nobility of France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Bohemia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Russia, and Belgium; and of the old aristocracy of the Southern States of America, together with baronets and county gentry. The five volumes together comprise some 3,550 pages, illustrated with portraits, photographs, and line drawings, and each volume is completely indexed . Originally published in a very limited edition, The Blood Royal has never before been reprinted.
