He is also a consulting editor at the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition. Great and friendly- reader source of information for people interested and involved in linguistics and language research!!

Traxler's introduction to Psycholinguistics latest book offers an up to date analysis of the psychological processes that enable humans to use language as one of the primary means of communication. Even though the text is dense and offers an extended review of the most relevant research works within the field, the language is very descriptive and there are also charts, visuals and graphs to better figure out content and theories. I am enjoying this material in my current studies in Ed. Linguistics!

Satisfying conclusion

It's time to say goodbye to Ethan and Danielle with the third and final book of the Fateful series! Forever is the final book and you`ll want to grab Fateful and Fractured first before reading this. Right from page one we are swept back to the story of Ethan and Danielle as humans struggling to survive with the protection of the vampires by their side. They are desperate for a normal life that doesn't involved being stalked by werewolves, vampires, witches and pixies!

As Ethan and Danielle struggle to survive with all the paranormal creatures after them they meet some new and interesting creatures! We meet the mystical and alluring mermaids that try to lure them in to the ocean, the witches, the evil pixies and the scariest of all where the spiders! I am not a fan of spiders to begin with and the way Cheri describes the spider scenes made my skin crawl, very realistic and creepy!

My favorite thing about this series is its originality. There are lots of stories out there that have paranormal activity going on but nothing quite compares to the way Cheri Schmidt weaves these creatures together in an original one-of-a-kind tale. I also really enjoyed the main characters Ethan and Danielle. Never did the author add a love triangle to the situation, which was refreshing, but they still dealt with realistic struggles and ups and downs. They were very genuine and lovable.

I'm sad to see this series come to in an end but I am satisfied with how we say good bye to these lovable characters and I'm looking forward to more stories by this talented author.

The best of the Fateful series!

let me start with OMG it seemed like we waited forever for this to come out and it didnt disappoint! It was by far the best of the series....we finally get to see Danielle and Ethan get there happy ever after, but not without some kindnapping, torture, and magic...but what would a day in Danielle and Ethans lives be like if something wasnt out to get them for curing the vampire curse!

In Forever we once again find Danielle and Ethans love put to the test as they are ripped apart from each other by more cursed creatures. Tired of the constant once a month break ins by the werewolves they seek help from Alohra and the faries, and from that point on the book is nothing but excitement! As there past familiarity is slowly shown to them in magic induced dreams, we get to see how they know eachother *something ive been dieing to know* they are once again torn apart and forced to seek shelter in magical cove, where we get to see more mythical creatures! and OMG the most horrifing part with possessed spiders...of all things why SPIDERS! I will be having nightmears for weeks!

If you havent purchased this yet, stop waiting you will not be disappointed! *be sure to read Fateful and Fractured 1st thou....

The Ending Was.......

Wow. What an amazing way to end the series. Sometimes authors have trouble tying up all the loose ends in a story but Cheri didnt. This book is completely amazing and perfect. Without giving anything away, this story has an ending i didnt see coming along with twists around every corner. I could not put this book down. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as i did.

This book shows how pricing decisions should be made

Exhibit 1-3 on page 9 of this new edition identifies three guiding principles of strategic pricing: (1) it must be value-based, which puts customers' perceptions at the heart of the process; (2) it must be profit-driven, a vital element for any business; and (3) it must be proactive--meaning marketers should not simply react to competitors' pricing moves.

As simple as this may sound, it's actually tricky to accomplish all three unless you follow the principles in this compact but detailed text.

If you need to know how to calculate breakeven sales volumes, cost factors, and channel pricing, this is the book for you. Exhibit 7-1 (on page 126) is particularly helpful for determining how to manage the price-setting process. I recommend this text for any executive who wants to avoid the "throw a dart" method of pricing.

Good reference, but only need to read the first few chapters

The author does a good job of establishing a framework for thinking about pricing in the first chapter of the book, then expands on that framework over the first few chapters. Like most business books, however, the deeper into the book you get the less valuable it becomes. Definitely worth buying, but you'll get 90% of the value from the first few chapters

Great reference on value-based. Wish it had more on setting initial price.

I updated from the 2nd edition I bought years ago. I'm glad to see the focus on value-based pricing. I was a little disappointed that it gets a bit repetitive on calculating price changes and it would be useful to see more examples on calculating the initial price when you really don't have much data to go on.

Another Complex and Intriguing Case

The Case of the Stuttering Bishop

Bishop William Mallory of Sydney, Australia visits Perry Mason about a manslaughter case. Could a sudden emotional shock cause stuttering? Perry calls Paul Drake to see if the bishop is genuine (Chapter 1). They find where Mallory is staying, but there is a mysterious attack on Mallory in his hotel room. An ambulance came for him, then another ambulance came for him! They track down the woman who visited him (Chapter 2). Her story about a personal ad checks out (Chapter 3). But the bishop got on a ship bound for Australia (Chapter 4). Julia Branner, formerly Mrs. Oscar Brownley, visits Perry and tells of her past life and what she wants (Chapter 5). Perry visits Renwold C. Brownley and they discuss the case (Chapter 6I). An early morning phone call wakes Perry with the message that a woman has shot and killed Renwold C. Brownley (Chapter 7)!

Perry finds that Julia Branner had gone to the waterfront, and saw another woman shoot Brownley. Perry tells her to not answer questions and he’ll try to help her (Chapter 8). Julia Branner was arrested for murder, Mallory disappeared from his ship (Chapter 9). Della’s impersonation of Janice Seaton draws out two private investigators (Chapter 10). Perry meets the granddaughter of Brownley, and finds Victor Stockton, one of the two private investigators, with a scheme that will trap Perry in a crime! Perry meets Philip Brownley, the grandson, who tells what he knows (this substantiates what a witness saw). When Perry interviews Julia Branner in jail he gets an unpleasant surprise. Paul Drake found a yachtsman who visited Mallory (Chapter 12).

Perry visits Hamilton Burger to explain his actions. Burger gives Perry little time to justify his story. It doesn’t look good for Perry and his client (Chapter 13). The preliminary examination of Julia Branner begins in Chapter 14, this reviews the known facts about the shooting. Perry notes the strange facts: if the shooter ran away, and Brownley was dead, who drove the car off the wharf? Perry is in an impossible situation. If Brownley drove off the wharf, he was not shot dead by Julia Branner (Chapter 15). A chance remark by Della Street puts a new light on one person’s activities the night of the murder. Perry plays this hand and it pays off (Chapter 16). They find out what happened to Bishop Mallory (Chapter 17). Perry explained what happened, and why Julia Branner refused to talk (Chapter 18). The next chapter concludes this case.

In this story Perry was very close to jail and disbarment. He was involved in more action than in other stories. This 1936 novel reflects the outlook of its day.

Marvelous early Perry Mason novel

I've been reading Gardner's Perry Mason books off and on for decades. Many years ago, I was an intense fan of the series, and read them all at least once. Now, after a lot of water over the dam, I'm looking at them again.

Those who are used to really fine mystery writers (in the literary sense), such as Ross Macdonald, may find Gardner's writing style off-putting. It can be stiff and mechanical. Nonetheless, I still love the general setting: the characters of Perry, Della, Paul, Lt. Tragg, and Hamilton Berger. That, and the ingenious plots, are why I read Perry Mason.

On the whole, the ones written by 1954 are the best. This one was published in 1936, and is a prime example of Gardner's early, gritty, film noir stage, which lasted until around 1941. It is superb!

The story begins when Anglican Bishop Mallory from Australia calls on Perry Mason. He tells a story of a chain of events of twenty-two years ago. Briefly, back then in LA, the elder son of a wealthy man named Renwold Brownley impetuously married a woman "beneath him" named Julia. Renwold Brownley hated her. The two young folks went to Australia where a baby girl was born. It was put up for adoption. The bishop was then a pastor who helped in the adoption. The young man soon returned to the US; his wife did not. In a few more years the young man died, and the young woman (Julia) faded from sight.

About three years before the present, the wealthy man, now old, wants to find his lost granddaughter. He spends a lot of money on detectives, who find the young woman -- or "a" young woman. She comes to live in the old man's mansion, where there is also living a grandson, who is the son of Brownley's other son, who is also now deceased.

So what's the problem? Bishop Mallory, who was coming to the US anyway, is convinced the young woman living with Brownley is an imposter. He wants to right this wrong. Furthermore, he says he knows where Julia is, and where the real granddaughter is! Both are in the US. But Mason is suspicious: the bishop stutters. A real bishop wouldn't do that, as public speaking is important to those who rise to that rank. Maybe Mallory is the imposter?

Soon Julia shows up and becomes Mason's client. The bishop mysteriously drops from sight, old man Brownley is murdered, Julia is arrested, and the race is on to find out what really happened. As usual, Mason skates around the edge of the law. He sets up a ruse involving Della Street as decoy to try to flush some of the people into the open. As a result, Della is almost murdered!

Hamilton Burger takes a personal interest in the case. Burger is out to get Mason! He says Mason has gone too far this time, and he is going to get him disbarred!

Like many of the stories early in the Perry Mason opus, this is an exotic romantic story. It's a real page turner, full of tense scenes. There is a bit of violence. I love it!

Good points: sympathetc client, Perry in jeopardy for his career, Della in jeopardy. Good use of Paul Drake, great use of Burger. No Lt. Tragg.

This is one of my favorite Mason stories. Highly recommended.

Negative points: coincidence of Mallory being on the same ship as the young woman "imposter." Without giving away a spoiler, I'll just say that the actions of some of the people (the imposters) seem a bit unreal.

This story is somewhat similar to the Careless Kitten: something happened at least ten years ago in a wealthy family involving a disappearance. At least one innocent young person today is affected, as is the ownwership of all that money.

It is very similar to Ross Macdonald's The Galton Case. I have to wonder if this was not the inspiration for the Galton Case.

Perry Mason Takes a Case on Behalf of a Stuttering Bishop

This is an early entry from the Perry Mason series, first published in 1936, When Perry could still drive anywhere in Los Angeles and get there in about twenty minutes and when one still had no problems finding a cab in L.A.

A stuttering bishop from Australia appears in Perry's office one afternoon, hinting at an injustice that began twenty-two years earlier when a millionaire, angry because his son had married against his wishes, conspires to make the son's new bride a fugitive from justice, fleeing from a trumped-up manslaughter charge. Now the son has died and it turns out that before divorcing his wife on Dad's orders, the wife got pregnant and had a daughter. After the son dies, Grandad takes the twenty-year-old daughter into his home.

The bishop can't or won't give Perry the full story and says Perry will have to puzzle it out for himself and see that justice is served. Perry is very suspicious because he can't imagine a stutterer rising to the rank of a bishop. But Mason loves a good mystery above all else and so dives in with both feet. Inevitably, someone's going to die and the case will take all sorts of complicated twists and turns.

Reading this book, one is again particularly impressed with the abilities of Mason's detective, Paul Drake, and the size of the agency that Drake runs. Paul is always there when Perry calls; he's never out of the office, and he never has to tell Perry that he's busy with another case and will get back to him next week. And he's virtually never short of manpower.

The second the bishop leaves the office, Perry is on the horn to Paul, wanting every last scrap of information about the bishop and several other people. And of course he wants it immediately. This would be virtually impossible, even in the age of the Internet, but it poses no problem for Paul. Perry also instructs Drake to track down the bishop and have him followed. Perry also wants Paul to follow everyone who contacts the bishop. Again, this appears to be no problem and Paul will dispatch several of the thirty or forty operatives who are apparently hanging around the office and ready to go to work.

My father loved these books and they were the first "adult" novels I ever read as a child, thus I've always had a soft spot in my heart for them. It's always fun to pull one off the shelf and turn back the clock to the days of my youth. As implausible as Perry's cases always are, they never fail to entertain me.

A very well written insight into the life of a geisha

I found this to be a very well written memoir about the time spent in the flower and willow world by a prominent geisha of her time. Mineko's story starts off as a young child, around the age of four, and continues until she shockingly leaves the world around the age of 29, at the prime of her career. It is written in a way that a non Japanese reader can gain insight into some of the customs and traditions of this fairly closed society. To us it seems odd that a child would be adopted out and forever "leave" their birth family, but this was a fairly routine practice. Mineko leaves home, begins geisha training, finds a true passion for dance, and becomes the adopted heir apparent to a well known established geisha house.

I found the surrounding people in the house fairly fascinating as well, and I am glad she included insight into their lives, how they became to be associated with her okiya. There is the expected bickering between coworkers and the "bosses" trying to hold it all together.

I liked the fact she talks about her dance training, talks about the teachers and her commitment to being the best dancer. I also like that she is up front about her, well we would call it her introverted personality, and how she knows this hinders her in other areas of her profession. (Entertaining at tea houses does not simply entail dancing, she has to entertain the guests and interact with other maiko and giesha.)

She is candid about some personal relationships, and that is refreshing in a book from this culture.

My only complaint, is that she often talks about how she wanted things in the geisha world to change, that she complained to " the head office" about things. I wish she would have written more about what she saw as problems. I guess if we sat down and had a cup of tea she might expound on how she felt their education was lacking (they basically don't learn any "real world skills") and what she would want changed. I didn't know if it was just that education, their working hours, their servitude to a house due to their debt, what issues she felt needed to be changed. I think that would have helped me appreciate her plight slightly more. Because she was basically at the top of the geisha food chain during her time, and if at the top she felt she had problems, it would be interesting to view her problems and how it might be worse for those geisha lower down the ladder.

But all in all I would say I loved this book. It had enough fancy kimono descriptions, geisha training/school stories, personal relationships, and family and geisha society descriptions to keep me turning the pages and wanting more. I think it was incredibly fortunate this book was written.

A great read.

Very readable, autobiographical-style account of what it was like to be a geisha in the decades following World War II. The word geisha literally translates to "art person", which is an accurate description of the kinds of skills a geisha needed to acquire. Top geisha were highly trained in a variety of arts and could earn the same kind of money as very successful doctors and lawyers in the United States. They needed to; their fine, handmade silk kimonos cost a small fortune. "Gion" in the title refers to the most famous geisha district in Japan, which is located in Kyoto. This book does an admirable job correcting common misconceptions about the nature of the geisha profession. Highly recommended building block toward a well-rounded understanding of Japanese culture.

Lots of interesting insights into a Geisha's life

Iwasaki illustrates her ascent into performances, decorum and the social politics of Kyoto's geisha in this candid biography. As a narrator, she tends to speak favorably of herself when describing herself as a dancer and entertainer. And frankly, why should she not? This is the world that she has been trained to live in since she was a toddler. Despite the many rigorous rules of decorum and education, passed down through a series of strict dance instructors and mentors, and the cultural passive role that geisha are expected to commit to in their line of work, Mineko's stubborn and independent personality emerges. Iwasaki's relationships with the female mentors, friends and foes in her life guide and shape her views on what it means to be a geisha, what it ultimately meant to walk away from the world and what it meant to tell her story.

A Brief Overview and Introduction

Dan Cohn-Sherbok's JUDIASM: RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD offers the student of comparative religion and/or Judaism a brief overview of crucial themes in Judaic belief and practice. The work consists of approximately 100 pages of text, followed by a glossary and pronunciation guide (both of which should be enormously helpful to novices). The book's strengths include the following: a) readers are given a strong introduction to Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Humanistic Judaism; and b) a chapter on contemporary observance takes the reader through religious practices. I would submit that the book would be even more helpful had it offered a more extensive discussion of historical Judaism and textual exegesis. However, the author did not seek to write a comprehensive history; that which is presented is solid, well-written, and student-friendly.

Very interesting reading on the search for truth!

Reading this book gives one the delightful sense of seeing a kaleidoscope in action or of seeing fractals unfold. In describing how truth is sought in letters, words, and texts, and how symbolism is applied and sought and re-applied, one starts to sense the joy and sheer intensity with which scholars probe the Torah for divine direction as well as hints about the nature of reality. These are material and insights I just would not have seen otherwise.

This book is well written and describes at a basic and relatable level the fundamental principles of Judaism. I am using it for a religious studies class and find it very helpful. It is so easy to understand that I may use it in the confirmation class that I teach. Great value.

Mithat G�nen is an Associate Attending Biostatistician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he specializes in clinical trial design, medical diagnostic tests, and predictive model development. A SAS user since 1991, he is the author of numerous professional papers and a member of the American Statistical Association and the International Biometric Society. Mithat received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Middle East Technical University, an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Statistics from Texas Tech University.

Highly recommended

I had to learn this technique a couple of years ago and the book helped me to quickly apply the technique to several research problems. The author was also very helpful as he answered my questions by email and shared his macro codes. After understanding the method conceptually and learned to use his macro, I wrote my own routine using PROC LOGISTIC. I still use the author's code to QC my results. I like his summaries/suggestions about result verification techniques.

I actually enjoyed learning about it through this book. I bought other two books recommended for purchase with this book, but I am glad I started from this practical and well-written introduction to the method.
