About the Author

Simon P. Washington is the Queensland Transport and Main Roads chair and professor in the School of Urban Development, Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering, Center for Accident Research and Road Safety (CARRS-Q), Faculty of Health at Queensland University of Technology. Dr. Washington is an associate editor of the Journal of Transportation Engineering; area editor�of the Journal of Transportation Safety and Security; and an editorial board member of Accident Analysis & Prevention, the Journal of Sustainable Transportation, and Transportation Research: Part A. His research interests include transport mobility safety and risk, travel behavior, urban and transport planning, and transport sustainability.

Matthew G. Karlaftis is an associate professor in the School of Civil Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens. Dr. Karlaftis is European editor of the Journal of Transportation Engineering; an associate editor of the Journal of Infrastructure Systems; and an editorial board member of Transportation Research: Part C, IET Intelligent Transport Systems, Accident Analysis & Prevention, and Transportation Letters. His research areas include public transit operations, urban transportation, and infrastructure management.

Fred L. Mannering is the Charles Pankow Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue University, where he also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Economics. Dr. Mannering is the author of over 100 journal papers and is the editor-in-chief of Transportation Research: Part B. His research interests include the application of econometric and statistical methods to engineering problems, highway safety, transportation economics, automobile demand, and travel behavior.

Today, the book enjoys a great deal of popularity and critical praise, especially in the wake of the 2006 film adaptation starring Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman, which has earned over $132 million. Ever since I was little, Ive loved comic books and the superheroes that populate their pages. Spider-Man, Batman, the X-Men; these were the first heroes I knew, and the heroes that would shape my interests for years to come, from comics specifically to storytelling and narrative in general. Of course, I grew up in the late 80s and early 90s, and while the stigma had tempered by my time, comics were largely considered to be a territory strictly for losers, for nerds, for kids. As it does for all of us, it came time for me to grow up but comics, my dear childhood treasures, I did not care to part with. While Spider-Man and his tights-donning cohorts still stayed with me, I yearned for something more, something with more substance. Surely, great minds had dabbled in the medium of comics, and created art. And indeed, I discovered, they had. Among titles such as Watchmen, Maus, and the Sandman series, V for Vendetta was one of the first comics I read meant for adults, and more so, meant to be art. I became familiar with it through the 2006 motion picture, but in actually reading the book, I was amazed at how intricate the narrative was. One cannot simply sit back and let V for Vendetta happen to you; it forces you to take an active role in your understanding in the material, else you be left in the dust. With the new-found popularity comics are enjoying today, I feel like the world discovered the true artistic value of comics as I did, and it became a thrilling time to live in. Granted, many of these titles existed before I was even born, but through perseverance, helped to lift the stigma that nothing of value lies in the funny pages. Wow.

I'm surprised that with all the Naruto fans that no one has left a review yet. Well I guess since I own the manga and love it dearly I can give an overview [spoiler alert to those who have not read this manga yet]

At the end of manga 16 Jiraiya and Naruto set off to locate Tsunade and return her to the village to become the 5th Hokage. Jiraiya goes off somewhere and leaves Naruto alone in their room at the inn and two Akatsuki members show up at the room door. In the mean time, Sasuke, who has a personal vendetta to fill, rushes to find the Akatsuki members tracking Naruto, one of which happens to be Sasuke's older brother Itachi. A fight between Sasuke and Itachi [the first of few] takes up the first four chapters.

In the fifth chapter we come to find out Tsunade is a compulsive gambler and Jiraiya and Naruto are closing in on her location. In the sixth chapter Jiraiya introduces Naruto to the technique next on Naruto's to do list, The Rasengan. The seventh chapter is mainly Naruto coming up with ideas on how to pass the first part of his training. Eighth the difficulty increases for Naruto and we see his desire for a family he never had. And in the final chapter we see a plot conspiring in Orochimaru's lair. And Tsunade "the legendary loser" wins a line of sevens witch to her bodes misfortune.

Great Manga

Anime wise, this manga goes to 84 (Roar, Chidori! Brother vs Brother) and 85 (Hate Among the Uchiha: The Last of the Clan). It's when Naruto meets Sasuke's brother Itachi for the first time. Itachi and Kisame are after Naruto for an unknown reason (which is revealed in Shippuden) but Sasuke stops the moment and fights his brother. When Sasuke got too weak to fight, Jiraiya steps in and saves the day. It's also when Naruto starts learning the Rasengan.

Must for all fans of Kishimoto's art!

This book, along with 16 and 18, definitely shines in showing some of Kishimoto's top drawings in my opinion. It's at that perfect blend of the very messy early style and the later crisp, realistic Part 2 style. In my opinion, simply amazing to stare at for hours. Don't believe me? Get it and see for yourself. Contains the Itachi and Sasuke background story/fight + Jiraiya and some sneak peaks of the 3rd Sannin, Tsunade. Excellent chapters.

Best Christian Legal Thriller I've Read

This book takes you on a ride. Strap yourself in and wait for the Final Witness to appear.
James Scott Bell does many of the things that Grisham does so well: tight plotting, believable motivations, crackling dialogue. Like "The Great Divide," by T. Davis Bunn, Bell reaches for the top rungs of legal thrillerdom and succeeds. The narrative is leaner and less colorful than Bunn's, but this only allows it to race faster.
While working in some valid Christian themes, often based on legal examples, "Final Witness" tells the compelling story of Rachel Ybarra, a young paralegal working on a case against the Russian mob. The details of the courtroom seem well-researched, and the struggles that Rachel goes through--with her alcoholic father, her boss, her FBI friends, and particularly her nemesis "The Man"--move credibly to a very satisfying end with a few surprises along the way.
Bell's other books are going to the top of my wish list.

I'm not usually a fan of legal dramas, but then I'd never read James Scott Bell before. This striking, well-written novel will keep you turning pages well after lights out! Set in L.A., Final Witness deals with the Russian mafia, a subject I'd never read about before. Fascinating detail, well-rounded characters and colorful description are obvious trademarks of this author. But it is his fabulous dialogue that elevates this fast paced novel to a higher level of fiction writing. Should most definitely be a movie! You won't be disappointed.

The best novel I've read in a long time!

This book had me hooked from the first sentence. It was a great read and I'm looking forward to Mr. Bell's next book! This guy knows how to keep his readers in suspense while writing well (excellent dialogue for example), and I learned more about the legal system without feeling like factual data was being crammed down my throat. I'd definitely recommend!

Not a true bilingual dictionary, but excellent nonetheless

I just have to clarify some aspects of this book. Since it has been designed to help people whose mother tongue is Hindi learn English, it does not translate all the words directly from English to Hindi. However, often there are rather explanations of the English terms provided in Hindi, while some words do not have the requisite English-to-Hindi translation (one word to one word) one would expect from such a dictionary. Further more, the words which are directly translated, do NOT contain the crucial information on their grammatical gender in Hindi (again, it is clearly not a bilingual dictionary and not a "companion" to the Hindi-English dictionary by R.S. McGregor). Still, the book has helped me a lot in learning Hindi's written language.

The reason why this book does not always offer one-word translations of English words, is that they simply do not exist in Hindi. As a native speaker with full proficiency in Hindi (but only the oral language, hence trying to learn the written language), I can affirm that fact. A lot of words relating to Western concepts do not have equivalents in Indian culture, and therefore no real Indian words. Still, the majority of the English words are given direct Hindi translations.

This book does give some colourful and generally humorous translations of concepts which are quite recent or alien in India - for instance pizza (not the best example) is translated roughly as "a round piece of dough on which one may put tomatos". Quite funny to read those kinds of entries!

This dictionary is made in India for people whose native tongue is Hindi and who wish to learn English. That is why there is no information provided on the Hindi nouns' genders. The publication is therefore not intended for non-Hindi speakers to use as an English-Hindi dictionary.

Still, being an Oxford dictionary, I will highly recommend it. The book is excellent in its coverage of Western terms and concepts and gives explanations and translations in the finest form of Hindi I have probably ever read, clearly adhering to Oxford's renowned standards. It still serves as a bilingual dictionary, and serious students will most surely have profit from using it. I have three other English-Hindi dictionaries (and they are, in contrast to this one, marketed as English-Hindi dictionaries for Anglophones learning Hindi) and none of them can compare with the breadth and quality of this Oxford work.

A good start

First, I am an American English speaker, but one who was trained at the University of Wisconsin in Hindi and have several years of Hindi language experience, including a year in India in Varanasi. This is the best such dictionary around. This English-Hindi dictionary is the best one out there, though with caveats noted below.

This is not a good sole reference for beginners. I would advise learning Hindi by taking a class, by using Bhatia's Colloquial Hindi audio course, by watching plenty of Bollywood and by regular tutoring from a native Hindi speaker. You can supplement that with the increasingly plentiful resources on the Internet. The study of Hindi is not an easy thing, though there are some good phrase books for travelers. It is still easier studying Hindi than other Indian languages, if you are not in India.

There is a great deal that still needs to be done before Oxford has a superb English-Hindi dictionary. This dictionary is bereft in contemporary usages. More Hinglish urban/Bollywood, and urban slang typical of Bombay and Delhi should be in this dictionary. Also, urban usage frequently includes words and expressions from regional languages such as Marathi or Urdu. I would like to see more commonly used words from other languages included in a useful dictionary.

An example: under the English word, "god", there is no suggestion of "bhagwaan". I don't understand this. It is in the MacGregor Hindi-English dictionary. I suggest that Verma/Sahai work with MacGregor to cross-reference both dictionaries more extensively, and start making the English-Hindi dictionary more indicative of contemporary usage.

Oxford, you are in the lead. Keep moving ahead with better references please.
