This is an incredibly detailed and well written book about the process of putting your TV Pilot together. There hasn't been anything like it on the market yet and really fills the gap of how to navigate your TV writing aspirations. It feels modern and addresses the current TV Show landscape perfectly. It's also inspiring and positive, making you WANT to go out, research and write. Highly recommend.

I've never reviewed a book on Amazon before but for 'The Hero Succeeds' I'm happy to take the time to do so. This is a great read and a very useful tool for anyone looking to put together a television series. It provides a thorough and understandable roadmap to take you from initial concept to a pitch ready series package.

Kam Miller's book is the definitive text on how to write a TV Pilot and arc your series. This isn't a quick book of shortcuts. This is an in-depth guide that leads you through the steps of LEARNING how to write a relevant, character driven television series. Ms. Miller has no doubt spent countless hours breaking down current shows and laying them out in a way that makes them accessible to writers creating their own series. Each chapter has a very clear exercise at the end. These exercises help you build your world and create your arcs for the story you want to tell. The format of this book is about giving you the tools that you need as a writer to make your show. Along the way, exercises are EXACTLY THE SAME as what would be asked of you as a professional writer in a writer's room or developing a show for producers or a network. It's hard work, but if you really want to write a show that has a shot of getting made or have a writing sample that will be noticed, use this book.

Loved this - a fascinating study of how we learn ...

Loved this - a fascinating study of how we learn to taste, feed, crave and eat. Extremely useful for new parents / parents of small children but also for anyone who has ever tried, unsuccessfully, to change their eating habits. This is a great study of human nature and psychology (both of which play a big role in our eating habits) and is written in an entertaining and informative way. Easy to read and enjoyable to read and hard to put down.

First Bite is a bit of a departure for Bee Wilson. She usually writes about food history, as in her excellent books Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat and Swindled:The Dark History of Food Fraud, as well as her many articles and reviews in magazines such as The London Review of Books.

In this book she investigates how and why we acquire food preferences, and the consequences of those preferences. This involves her delving into biology, chemistry, history, sociology, and a great deal of personal experience.

The science and history of how we decide what and what not to eat is fascinating, although I was not as interested in the emphasis on the many ways that children fail to eat properly or even at all sometimes. Those who are parents or who have vivid memories of their own childhood experiences with food will probably appreciate these discussions more.

Perhaps the most important finding that Wilson details is that food preferences are not set in stone -- you can learn to enjoy food that you've always avoided. Further, whole societies (Japan is her best example) can change their diets for the better. It gives us all a bit of hope that we can reverse the alarming trends of the past several decades.

Wilson also branches out into new territory by actually providing some recommendations on how to deal with the food idiosyncrasies of children and with our own diets as adults.

Changed the way I think about eating

Changed the way I think of what I "like" and "don't like" and definitely gave me some great ideas for how to develop a great palate in my children. I'm actually excited to get vegetables in front of them and I have a more reasoned perspective on what makes them like something or not like something. Definitely recommend for anyone with young kids or those who think there are large categories of foods (e.g., "i don't like fish", "i don't eat vegetables") that aren't for them.

Most people do not know what they do not know

Please do not let the people who do not understand the message of this book cloud your perception of it. This book along with his previous volume are revolutionary. Tharp's entire career is working with top traders and creating a model of success from the characteristics they share. It is more than a rehash of his previous material and in fact goes into even greater detail. One of June's main contributions to this book is how to create a mission statement and how to link that with your live trading. I had a little trouble wrapping my mind around this but he insisted it was so very critical so I reread the chapter until it made sense. Well, when the "light" went on a feeling washed over me that was both palpable and visceral. If you faithfully undertake to complete all of the material outlined in this book, then you will actually have a shot at becoming more than antother statistic. Something I noticed several years ago is the similarity between the failure rates of business startups and private traders. This is most likely due to a lack of adequate planning and discipline (in this I include research, sufficient capital, etc.) For this reason, I must make the strongest recommendation possible for this book as well as its predecessor, "Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom." They compliment each other very well and are both essential reading. Dr. Tharp is a psychologist and an NLP practitioner who originally assisted top-level athletes achieve peak performance. He has moved over to helping traders do the same. You will learn how to define your goals and objectives as clearly as possible and create a comprehensive business plan that will leave you no question as to what one can expect from his or her trading. Other tools that are extremely helpful include a chapter on the most commonly made mistakes and how to identify and correct them and a chapter on how to properly keep a journal. The journal will help to more quickly figure out if, when and where a trading plan has gone wrong and spot any detrimental events or patterns that may occur. It breaks down the elements of successful trading so effectively that it truly gives people a chance of succeeding who otherwise would have suffered the same fate as most day traders. This book has more to offer than the previous in terms of methodology but those methods are for equities traders only. Futures trading methods are not addressed in this book. However, if a system is all you are really looking for, then you are still missing the bigger picture and your time would be better spent on a resume. An unprepared trader has almost no chance of succeeding and would be ill advised to try. Sure you could get lucky but the chances staying lucky and surviving for any amount of time are infinitesimally small. Avail yourself all of the best tools possible. These two books are two of them. Another book to consider is "The Trading Game" by Ryan Jones. It is a book on money management that is unique in its algorithm and the logic of which is superior to any other method I have seen to date.

Indispensible

The most important chapter in the book that I found was chapter 3, that of developing a business plan. Of course every chapter had great information, however, without a plan you can't expect to get anywhere, or make any money for that matter. His first book was excellent, his second book is equal. Start with the first and only after you fully understand it read, I mean, DO this book. Only if you do the exercises with a notebook will you gain anything!

Good, but a disappointment compared to Tharp's classic

Van Tharp's earlier book, Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom, ranks with Market Wizards as a trading classic. Like Market Wizards, Tharp showed how the true "Holy Grail" of trading is to develop your *own* system, one which is perfectly suited to your own goals and needs. (I know it sounds wishy-washy... but believe me it's anything but.) Not only that but, unlike Market Wizards, Tharp showed you step-by-step how to actually do this! The result was, while far from perfect, one of the most amazing and probably the single most useful book on how to become a successful trader. I was hugely excited when I (a day trader) found out that Tharp's next book would be about day trading. Alas, it turns out to be a disappointment. It's not bad as such, only nowhere near the same level. Specifically, this book consists of: (1) material by Tharp that covers the same ground as before, only in less detail; (2) an overview of the basics of day trading, such as how to read Level II screens; (3) occasional insights and ideas which you might not find elsewhere. So here's what I would recommend. If you don't already know (1), run (don't walk!) to get Tharp's earlier book; don't even think about buying this one instead. If you don't already know (2), this book is a pretty good introduction to day trading, better than most that are out there. Lastly, is the book worth buying for (3)? It sort of depends. If, like me, you love to devour books about the markets, and believe that they more than pay for themselves if you get even one new tradeable idea -- then sure, buy it, just don't expect too much. If, on the other hand, you only want to spend your time and money on the very best books, well, this is no must-have. I like both authors, and they do know what they are talking about, but this book is far from the best that either is capable of. It shows all the signs of having been put together hastily.

You may take everything but you can't take my heart

This is a harrowing tale of slavery, abuse and degradation. This is a review of the first three books and while the story of Violets plight into slavery was difficult to get through, I was pulled in to the story, it had me thinking about survival and whether I could withstand the life thrust upon Violet. Can someone be forced to give up everything and survive? This was a thought provoking tale of one mans (Wang) attempt to bend the will of a strong woman and would stop at nothing to own her mind, body and (soul)Heart. Violet is forced to give up her body and mind but refuses to give up her heart. Wang's fascination with Violet grows from book one through book three and while he is a cruel and heartless man, we begin to see that deep down he may be capable of love. It is hard to tell where Paul Blades will take us in the next book but I am hoping violet will lead Wang out of his darkness and into the light.

It was well written, engaging and hard to put down. I did come across a dozen grammatical errors and some of the content I had to skim through because I did not want to have to go through the cruelty again and again. I do not condone this type of treatment of women but it did leave me pondering some philosophical questions about trust, power and the ability of giving up of oneself completely to another human being.

Recommend this to anyone looking for true crime book, hard to read in parts because of disturbing details of the crime, I had to skip a page here and there because it was so confronting but worth reading to follow the awesome police work that bought this creep to justice.

This was a sad, sad story. Two mentally ill people trying to use each other to get their needs met. One was a decent person and the other only pretended to be. It was a tragedy waiting to happen. The forensics will blow you away!

According to the United Nations' latest data, the United States has more children living in poverty than any other industrialized nation in the world. More than a fifth of all children grow up in poverty. The poverty rates for African-American and Latino children often exceeds 40 percent. Furthermore, the United States--a country that once pioneered strategies to prevent child abuse and that now spends more money fighting child abuse than any other industrialized country--also has the highest rate of child abuse in the industrialized world.

Against this background, Duncan Lindsey, a leading authority on child welfare, takes a critical look at the current welfare system. He traces the transformation of child welfare into child protective services, arguing that the current focus on abuse has produced a system that is designed to protect children from physical and sexual abuse and therefore functions as a last resort for only the worst and most dramatic cases in child welfare. Lindsey surveys U.S. and Canadian child-welfare systems, from the orphanages of the 1800s to recent legislation mandating child-abuse reporting, which resulted in a skyrocketing increase in the number of reports of suspected abuse. Since then, investigations of alleged abuse have consumed virtually all the resources of the child-welfare systems, transforming them into child-protection agencies. Funding cuts have further narrowed the focus of who receives services. However, Lindsey believes that responsibility for protecting criminally assaulted children must shift to the police and courts and that the child-welfare systems must be redirected to developing policies and programs to ameliorate the plight of disadvantaged and impoverished children. Essential reading for anyone concerned with child welfare

The Welfare of Children is a stunning achievement. Lindsey examines several vital issues heretofore untouched, charting a course for the future of child welfare with remarkable clarity of vision.
In this most comprehensive and thoroughly annotated volume, Lindsey traces the transformation of child welfare into child protective services.
Lindsey explodes the many myths which have served for so long to perpetuate this transformed system. Chief among them are those most commonly held misperceptions that child welfare programs based on the "residual model" have reduced child fatalities by any measure, and that they have served to increase the welfare of children overall.
Lindsey explores in depth the critical decision-making processes involved in making the determination of whether or not to remove a child from his home. He clearly demonstrates that the field of child welfare lacks a scientific knowledge base from which to draw, and that the critical decisions involving the welfare of children and families are inherently unreliable.
Rather than offer another book replete with anecdotal "horror stories," Lindsey offers instead a scholarly work which will serve to greatly enhance the reader's understanding of the history and dynamics of child welfare, and the forces driving its transformation from child welfare into child protective services.

Lindsey offers a blueprint for a future which will better serve children. He offers a compelling argument for the criminal justice system to assume responsibility for dealing with the problem of child abuse, such that the child welfare system can return to its role of addressing the overall well-being of a greater number of children.
He makes extensive use of charts and graphs, while managing to do so in such a way as not to distract the more casual reader. His use of advanced statistical analysis is explained clearly, for the benefit of all readers. Few books can so magnificently reach out to touch such a potentially diverse audience of readers, reaching the intellect as effectively as it does the heart.
This is one of those rare volumes that no student of the child welfare system should be without. Put this book at the top of your list.

The writer slings arrows with rubber tips.

Have you ever read a book on a subject with which you have some expertise and wonder if the writer is just making things up as he goes along? This was nearly the experience in reading this book by Duncan Lindsey a UCLA professor.

The first problem is that Lindsey takes the shotgun approach to arguing his points against the existing child protective services system. Instead of centering his arguments on a few specific issues and developing his thesis, he tries to address every conceivable aspect of the child welfare system and liberally scatters his thoughts and comments without a strong basis of analysis. The result is a loose confederation of ideas none of which with a firm foundation for acceptance.

The second problem is that Lindsey attempts to address issues for which he does not seem to have actual knowledge. His attack on the legal basis of the child protective system, for being a civil model rather than a criminal model, is amateurish (at best). His understanding of the social workers management of the case lacks first hand understanding of the field. I wanted to give some examples to explain my points, but it would result in a much longer review than what I prefer. It must suffice to say that I believe the professor's expertise is apparently more academic and esoteric than real life.

A third problem is Lindsey's contradicting himself in various parts of his book. For example, he spends time discussing how children's deaths is increasing, but in another chapter argues that death is but a small area of concern for protecting children. He titles this later chapter as "Child abuse, the red herring of child welfare." Therefore, he argues that the current system is not doing enough to protect children from destructive parents, but argues that too much of the same system focuses on a problem that is a small issue in child welfare. So which is it?

It is unfortunate that the author did not sacrifice a couple of hundred pages and written a monograph on one of his points. Then he could have provided a document worth quoting and considering. Instead, we have a lengthy diatribe absent developed charges worth remembering.
