Wish it was still in physical form

Matt Callison's motor point book was great...we have it in our clinic at my school. Unfortunately, it is no longer available in a physical book and I had to get it via Kindle. For me, it makes it very user-unfriendly since I don't take my computer to school with me, hence I am unable to utilize it when I really want it, particularly since you can't print anything from the Kindle. The spiral bound flip book was much more usable.

I use this kindle book more than any other for both motor point study and quick reference.
The only thing that could be improved would be the addition of origin and insertion for each muscle.

A must read for those treating any muscle pain issue.

Pros...it is a breakdown of every muscle in the body and how to correctly needle it. The benefits of knowing a quick and efficient system to mediate pain and to illicit the healing process is indispensable in a busy practice. The book has a clear and concise picture for each muscle showing the motor point, adjacent acu points and surrounding muscles. The book also helps as a refresher course in anatomy, just in case you had forgotten a certain muscle or it's origin, insertion or action. This book should be part of every acupuncturists library, no matter what style he/she uses. It will makes you so much more confident in your handling of any muscle pain situation, and will make you look like pro to your patients as well.

cons...wish the book was a bit less expensive, as I have the electronic version. The electronic version is limited by the inability to quickly move about the book to different body sections, as it would for with a physical copy book. But it does save on weight.

Not well presented for digital use but lots of good information.

Helped my step son with ANOVA, he bought the book.

CONS: As the other reviewer (who gave 3 stars) noted, the book is hard to navigate. It is literally a digitized book without the ability to jump to the suggested places (tables) nor the ability to return where you came from; it is hunt and search - to where you are going and to where you want to return. There are misprints "degress" for "degrees." A numerator of 5 instead of 15. This book has been given cursory editing.

The page at hand does not seamlessly scroll to the next page; each page is displayed separately. For instance, formulas are often incomplete on the bottom of one page and then to the following page with the rest of the formula. An important formula should be on one page for easier understanding.

Page layout is horrific: there are, usually, two columns per page, so when scrolling down, you go to the next page not the next column! And, there are more complications here: when you scroll up to continue reading the next column you will invariably go to the previous page. The top of a page is not demarcated in any way so you know when to stop.

PROS: you can make pretty lines and highlights on text, pictures and formulae. Also, good information

Great Book!

Having read many versions of the Bible over the years, I'm finding this book to be very enjoyable because instead of writing in verse numbers and archaic language, this is in English and written as a story. It's good to read this in narrative form because it explains some of the battles and merciless killings and who did what to whom. I'm not commenting on the content, just the format in which it is written. This is a fabulous adjunct to the Holy Bible and I highly recommend this book as an addition to your ancient books library.

G. J. Whitrow (1912-2000) begins this classic exploration of the nature of time with a story about a Russian poet, visiting London before the First World War. He discusses how our ideas of time originated; how far they are inborn in plants and animals; how time has been measured, from sundial and hourglass to the caesium clock, and whether time possesses a beginning, a direction, and an end. He coaxes the diffident layman to contemplate with pleasure the differences between cyclic, linear, biological, cosmic, and space-time, and he provides frequent diversions into fascinating topics such as the Mayan calendar, the migration of birds, the dances of bees, precognition, and the short, crowded lives of mu-mesons, particles produced by cosmic-ray showers that exist for just two millionths of a second.

This reissue of the classic and authoritative What is Time? includes a new introduction by Dr J. T. Fraser, founder of the International Society for the Study of Time, and a bibliographic essay by Dr Fraser and Professor M. P. Soulsby of the Pennsylvania State University.

About the Author
G. J. Whitrow was the first President of the International Society for the Study of Time and held the same position in numerous other scientific societies. He was a frequent broadcaster on radio and his many books include 'Time in History', 'Atoms and the Universe' (with G.O. Jones and J. Rotblat) and 'Einstein: The Man and His Achievement'. Dr. J. T. Fraser is the founder of the International Society for the Study of Time and author of several books including 'Time, Conflict, and Human Values'. He is widely acknowledged as the world's foremost expert on the study of time. Professor Marlene P. Soulsby is Associate Professor in German and Comparative Literature at Pennsylvania State University.

Excellent Read on the Subject of Time

Time. We are constantly faced with the issue of time. “I don’t have enough time to accomplish that task.” “If I could go back in time, I’d make State.” (statement courtesy of Uncle Rico). What exactly is time? Have we ever taken the time to stop and think about time or is just something that seems to tick away for us from cradle to the grave?

Recently, I have been giving some thought as to the nature of time. In Scripture, the issue of time is everywhere. We are on a progressive movement on a timeline towards the end of days. One can argue that time became a construct for humanity at creation and before that point there was no such thing as time in the manner we understand it to be today. This of course begs the question as to what eternity future will be like. The reality is the subject of time has been a focus of civilizations throughout history. Many of those civilizations approached time in various ways. In his helpful book aptly titled What is Time?: The Classic Account of the Nature of Time, Dr. G. J. Whitrow walks the reader through this important subject.

Whitrow begins by examining how the concept of time originated. We clearly organize our days by a calendar and the passage of time and the ancients did the same, albeit in a different manner. I was very much fascinated by the fact many ancient cultures believed in a cyclical view of time rather than the linear approach of more modern civilizations. While Whitrow does not delve much if at all into how time was viewed in a biblical sense, the view of the ancients helps us have a sense of how time is presented in Scripture. We see a number of processes and cycles throughout Scripture. In fact, the movement of “time” from the Garden of Eden to a place of future redemption is presented as a cycle, namely that of redemption. We also see the cycle found within agriculture, cycles of rebellion and repentance. While these cycles move in what seems as a linear progression, in fact, it can be asserted based on the concepts presented by Whitrow that any linear movement takes place within the overarching framework of process and cycles.

Another fascinating aspect of this book is Whitrow’s engagement of the biological clocks subsumed within creation, both man and animal. In fact, we often speak of a woman’s biological clock. Additionally, we can observe cycles within nature that are repeated like clockwork such as the migration of animals to warmer climates at the onset of winter.

How we count time is also discussed by Whitrow. Throughout history, man has devised various ways to calculate the passage of time, not only within the framework of a day, but also over longer periods of time. Some of the ancient calendars and methods of accounting for time were quite precise. While some of Whitrow’s discussion was a bit over my head as it engaged quite a number of scientific facts that are outside of my knowledge base, the information was nevertheless quite fascinating and further demonstrates the importance of all things time when it comes to our daily lives.

In the concluding chapter of this book, Whitrow makes what I believe to be an important observation regarding the reality of time based on the studies of scientists. He notes, “Nowadays most of us tend to accept automatically the idea that time is continuous because we believe in the continuity of our existence. Until the present century it was also possible to believe in the continuity of matter and energy, but with the establishment of the atomic theory of matter and of the quantum theory we have been compelled to abandon those beliefs.” The fact of the matter is time is drawing to a close, namely to the end of days outlined in Scripture. Thus, a biblical view of time can be rooted in the grasp of time as a series of cycles within a larger cycle all moving towards a defined end point.

While Whitrow’s perspective is not totally rooted in Scripture, this is after all not a theological text. What one can learn from this book is the various points I noted in this review, most notably how the ancients perceived time and how that perception of time as a cyclical process towards a defined end determined by the Creator is a reality. What is time? If you have every pondered that question, take a look at this book. It just might help you appreciate the idea and reality of time. I can say one thing and that is reading this book is definitely not a waste of time.

John R. W. Stott (1921-2011) has been known worldwide as a preacher, evangelist and communicator of Scripture. For many years he served as rector of All Souls Church in London, where he carried out an effective urban pastoral ministry. A leader among evangelicals in Britain, the United States and around the world, Stott was a principal framer of the landmark Lausanne Covenant (1974). His many books have sold millions of copies around the world and in dozens of languages. Stott's best-known work, Basic Christianity, has sold two million copies and has been translated into more than 60 languages. Other titles include The Cross of Christ, Understanding the Bible, The Contemporary Christian, Evangelical Truth, Issues Facing Christians Today, The Incomparable Christ, Why I Am a Christian and Through the Bible Through the Year, a daily devotional. He has also written eight volumes in The Bible Speaks Today series of New Testament expositions. Whether in the West or in the Two-Thirds World, a hallmark of Stott's ministry has been expository preaching that addresses the hearts and minds of contemporary men and women. Stott was honored by Time magazine in 2005 as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" and was named in the Queen’s New Years Honours list as Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1969, Stott founded the Langham Trust to fund scholarships for young evangelical leaders from the Majority World. He then founded the Evangelical Literature Trust, which provided books for students, pastors and theological libraries in the Majority World. Great teaching phrases-but check his exegesis

I think that this commentary is very much like other Stott commentaries that I have used (Ephesians & Romans). He gives great phrases for teaching and preaching. For example in chapter 1:1 he goes into detail about what an apostle was from a Jewish perspective. Then he gives a mini excursus on NT apostleship...and teaches that there can be no more apostles in any sense. He does not offer convincing evidence for his position. The problem with all of this is that none of it comes from the Galatians text he is discussing. There isn't anything in Galatians 1:1 that would tell us in any way that apostles are not for today. That sort of conclusion is not exegetical and is debated hotly in various circles. So you must watch out for Stott to give one side of a debated issue without clueing you in on the other views. So why do I rate this a four star? Why do so many people like Stott's stuff?

I think that it's really good to use Stott's material for innovative and catchy phrases that summarize the terminology well. He often has an innovative outline of whatever he is teaching on. Galatians is no exception to that rule. Another thing that is great about this commentary is that it follows his matching bible study guides. So a Bible Study Leader can use Stott to start discussions, and if he has read this book, he has more meat to add to the discussions. To round out Stott, I heartily recommend the following additions.

Since FF Bruce has a commentary on Galatians, I recommend his. Also Fung's NICNT on Galatians is very careful to thoroughly explore the most reasonable options and show why one is superior over the others. Both of them are really good.

One more point...Stott sometimes interacts with popular pressures from different camps. For example in Galatians 1:1-2 he interacts with the radical camp and then turns to interact with the catholic theologians. For the radicals he says that Paul's apostolic authority is divine and higher than the contemporary authority they claim is equal to Paul. For the catholics, he says that apostolic succession is not a biblical concept. In these interactions he is very convincing. He provides answers for people who may be hearing things from these two popular groups that are contrary to Paul's teaching in Galatians.

So for his interactions, fresh phraseology and innovative outlines, I recommend Stott heartily. Just check his exegesis...he should not be the solo commentary for a study on Galatians. If you can only get one, I recommend Fung's or Bruce's. Having said that, I will keep using Stott whenever I study Galatians. He is excellent overall. I'm grateful to have this commentary in my office.
