Beware of Slim Volumes!

As they say, "beware of slim volumes"... this book while not a "big book" it is packed with vital information on navigating the complexities of human relationships. Dr. Skeen uses the Schema Theory which was appealing to me in examining my patterns because of my repeating of destructive, self defeating behavior in relationships. Of all the books I have read on relationships, this book clearly helped me identify the root causes of my struggles in relationships. Unlike some books on relationships, this one is not only theory but practice. Dr. Skeen thoughtfully engages the reader with worksheets and exercises which truly engaged me in the process of honestly evaluating my truth and my part in the dynamics of my relationships. The book is very helpful because no matter if you are the "critical partner" or not, there is ample understanding for all parties. The book is not a "blame book", it's a book of deepening understanding, empathy and most importantly healing solutions. Because the Schema Theory is about addressing repeating destructive patterns in relationship that are related to childhood, this work gets to the real causes of our reactions and difficulties in dealing with others, and truly helps the reader create solutions and ultimately healing and healthy choices.
Dr. Michelle Skeen also has a great website which I highly recommend, [...]. The website also has links to her weekly radio show, "Relationships 2.0", which is in limited distribution in California radio markets. I predict Dr. Skeen's work and media exposure is just beginning, keep your eyes and ears tuned to her. She has valuable workable solutions to the challenges of improving relationships. This book is a staple of my self improvement, and I cannot recommend it enough as a path to growth!

In this age of disconnection, Michelle guides you to deeper connection with yourself and with your significant others. The examples and worksheets are incredibly helpful. Kindergarten-Grade 3 - Luke wants to join his older brother and his friends in their stickball game but they think he's too small. The boys live in the shadow of Ebbets Field, where the great Jackie Robinson plays for the Brooklyn Dodgers in this summer of 1951. When Luke finally gets a chance to substitute, he strikes out twice. Back home, his grandma encourages him, saying, "Not everyone plays like Jackie Robinson all the time. Not even Jackie Robinson." She takes Luke to a game where he watches his hero, two strikes down, deliver the tie-breaking run. Later, the boy has a vision of the slugger, who speaks to him: "Your grandma was right. You can't give up." In the imaginary scenes, Robinson and his teammates are dramatically set apart in shades of gray, white, and black, while Luke and his surroundings remain vibrantly hued. Isadora's lively watercolors with fluid lines and warm colors elevate this slight story. Luke is winsome and sympathetic, but the tale and its message are predictable and heavy-handed. The inclusion of Robinson will hold some interest for baseball fans, but Gavin Curtis's The Bat Boy & His Violin (S & S, 1998) and Peter Golenbock's Teammates (Harcourt, 1990) are better choices for young readers. - Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

After Jackie strikes out twice before hitting a home run, Luke begins to understand that even the greatest players can't always be perfect. A final spread in which Luke imagines a conversation with Robinson may confuse children, and the messages about determination are blatant. Even so, children mastering new skills will easily relate to Luke's frustration when early attempts bring failure, and they'll be comforted, right along with Luke, by supportive Grandma. Isadora paints her African American characters in angled perspectives and shadows that extend the sports action and reassuring emotions. Suggest Angela Johnson's Just Like Josh Gibson (2004) for another nostalgic, bat-and-ball picture book about African American kids finding inspiration and pride in sports heroes. Gillian Engberg

Luke hits a homerun!

I thought this a homerun book. My family is baseball crazy and we have 4 children. When I bought this book and brought it home there was an explosion in my house.........even though we live in London, baseball is very exciting and we follow it continually. Thank you for such a splendid book and for letting us understand the times in the USA when Jackie Robinson lived.

About the Author

Bohdan W. Oppenheim, PhD has been a professor of systems engineering at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles since 1983. He is a recognized global leader in Lean systems engineering and author of an influential book titled Lean for Systems Engineering with Lean Enablers for Systems Engineering.

Dr. Oppenheim co-led a team of 15 experts supported by a community of 150 practitioners to develop the best Lean-inspired practices for managing complex engineering programs. For this work he received the Shingo Award, the highest honor in the field of operational excellence, INCOSE’s Best Product Award, and two smaller awards. This work was later expanded into a joint project of the Project Management Institute (PMI), International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) led by a team based at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on which Oppenheim served as key contributor. The result was a second book on Lean-inspired best practices for managing engineering programs, The Guide to Lean Enablers for Managing Engineering Programs for which the team was honored with a Shingo Award (the second for Oppenheim).

Dr. Oppenheim is the founder and co-leader of the INCOSE Lean Systems Engineering Working Group, the organization’s largest working group involving more than 200 members. He also directed Loyola Marymount University’s US Department of Energy Industrial Assessment Center. In this capacity, he advised 125 Southern California companies of all sizes and types on Lean productivity matters.

With S. Rubin, Dr. Oppenheim designed Aerospace Corporation’s POGO simulator for liquid rockets used by NASA and private industry. He consulted for Northrop-Grumman, Boeing, Airbus, EADS, Telekomunikacja Polska, Mars, Medtronics, the US Coast Guard and the US Air Force, Thales, TRW, and 50 other firms and governmental institutions in the United States and Europe.

Dr. Oppenheim is or was a member of INCOSE, LAI EdNet, PIASA, ASEE, ASME, ISOPE, NPAJAC, and SNAME. His honors include a Fulbright Award, (2011) IAE fellowship, and the 2008 Best Engineering Teacher award by the Los Angeles Council of Engineers and Scientists. He has been the recipient of almost $2 million in externally funded grants. He is the author of 40 books and book chapters, technical journal articles, and many non-technical articles, books, and TV programs. He also presented 45 workshops, tutorials, and webinars on Lean Enablers and Lean Product Development Flow in Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, UK, and the United States.

Dr. Oppenheim was born and raised in Warsaw and has lived in the United States since 1971. He earned a PhD (1980) from University of Southampton in the UK; a postgraduate degree (1974) from MIT; a master’s in ocean systems (1972) from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey; and a BS (1970), from Warsaw Technical University. He divides his time between Santa Monica, California, and Warsaw, Poland

Marek Jan Felbur has served since 2002 as director for corporate banking at BRE Bank S.A. He was involved in negotiations and bilateral credit agreements for leading consortia and companies including VW AG, Ford, Pfleiderer AG, Mercedes Benz, Orlen, Lotos, Huawei, and Belvedere. He also participated in complex restructuring negotiations for the steel industry and negotiated for multinational banks operating in Central and Eastern Europe to obtain local credit service permits. He is a member of the German–Polish Chamber of Commerce.

Before joining BRE Bank, Felbur worked for 21 years for Polimex-Cekop starting as a sales representative and advancing to member of the management board. He was responsible for privatization and restructuring of the company including takeovers of two companies on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. For eight years, he conducted negotiations, managed finances, and executed 63 successful technology investment projects in the People’s Republic of China. He was named a director for trade and marketing and group director responsible for organization, operations, and finance (2000 sales of about 1.5 billion PLN, almost 10,000 employees). Felbur was the CEO of Polimex-Cekop Development and a director and CEO of Media International Belgrade, a member of the boards of directors of ZREW S.A. and Naftorement, and has served on the board of Polish Mint S.A. since 2006.

His education includes a master’s in international trade from the Warsaw School of Economics (formerly Main School of Planning and Statistics). He completed managerial courses on company appraisals, capital group management, mergers and takeovers, service on boards of directors, management communications, and Lean in several countries.

Why you do me like that Sasha? Lol This story was so compelling from the way you opened the book to the way you ended it. I couldn't put it down and I spent the last hour and 20 minutes reading it. You did your thing girl!

I love this book it had me smiling one minute and mad the next and I know there has to be a part two Sasha it has to be please because i need to know what the outcome of Tony life's that he's so dying to get away from.. I love Tony and the fact that he doesn't want to lose his life to the stupid dope gang. I despise his father Anthony his brother CJ and his mother Mia i mean what type of parents would want their children to sell dope and lose their life to the streets & what type of parents would want their children to sell drugs. Per our conversation on facebook Sasha u had me their for a moment thinking that his rekindled love Kelsey was up to something which she was but it was all good intentions..lol I enjoyed this book i loved it loved it but u have to hurry up w/ 2 cuz i need to know where Tony drove to which i'm hoping he cont on his journey to Berkley, CA....
to all readers Sasha Ravae is awesome writer and she is part of Jade Jones Publications if you haven't read any of her books i suggest you do so she has six books and i've read all except for 1 and each book i find fasinating and i admir her God given talent.. so once agian go and get your copy you won't be dispointed I promise you!!!!
