About the Author
Alan S. Gurman, PhD, until his death in 2013, was Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. A pioneer in the development of integrative approaches to couple therapy, he edited and wrote many influential books; was a past two-term editor of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy; and was former President of the Society for Psychotherapy Research. Dr. Gurman received numerous awards for his contributions to couple and family therapy, including the Distinguished Achievement in Family Therapy Research Award from the American Family Therapy Academy and the Distinguished Contribution to Family Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association. He also received the Award for Distinguished Achievement in Teaching and Training from the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers.

About the Author
Graham McNeill is the author of seven Horus Heresy novels, most recently Vengeful Spirit and Angel Exterminatus, along with the New York Times bestseller A Thousand Sons. He has written a host of other novels for Black Library, including Warhammer 40,000 series based on the Ultramarines, the Iron Warriors and the Adeptus Mechanicus. His work in the Warhammer World includes The Legend of Sigmar for the Time of Legends, the second book of which, Empire, won the David Gemmell Legend Award. Originally hailing from Scotland, Graham now lives and works in Nottingham.

The Seduction of Chaos

The Horus Heresy continues and in Fulgrim we are given an excellent look at the seductive and ultimately destructive power of chaos. Hitherto, the reader has been given a vision of the Astartes as embodying the most perfect attributes of humanity. Much of this novel focuses on the pursuit of perfection both among the human artisans, remembrancers and of course the Astartes themselves. We watch as the central players follow their individual paths to perfection and ultimately to personal ruin.

Ostian the sculptor, Serena the painter and of course Fulgrim the most perfect of Astartes seek to achieve a level of perfection, which is of course completely unattainable. Ahhh...but wait...enter the seeds of chaos and the whispers of true perfection.

The key to chaos' infiltration is the Battle against the Laer which culminates in the final battle within the Laer Temple. It's other worldly music infects all that come into contact with it.

McNeill does a terrific job of painting the chaos that inexorably infects, and finally overwhelms all those on Fulgrim's ship. The scenes described during the Maraviglia are unlike anything I have ever read. The Maraviglia depicts in microcoysm the truth of what will become the Horus Heresy. While the story does not end with the Maraviglia, everything that follows after seems anti-climatic. By the end of the Maraviglia we know that Chaos has achieved its victory over Fulgrim.

Not wanting to spoil it, I will simply say that Fulgrim's fate is truly frightening and foreshadows Horus' future.

So grab a copy of this outstanding novel and stick close to the likes of Saul Tarvitz and Gabriel Santor less the sweet, chaos laden chorus of the Laer deliver you into Chaos.

The Emperor protects.

A very good tale of Fulgrim's fall but could've been longer

The novel Fulgrim marks the 5th entry in the current Horus Heresy novels from Games Workshop's Black Library. It details the seduction and fall from the Emperor's grace of one of his Primarch sons. Graham McNeill, who has written one other Heresy book, returns to pen this tale of the Emperor's Children and their leader.

While I agree with the other reviewers in that parts of Fulgrim felt rushed or underdeveloped all in all Graham McNeill did a very good job in telling how one of the Primarchs gradually became seduced by the lure of Chaos. Fulgrim had always been one of the more interesting Primarchs in the Warhammer 40K pantheon in that his fall from grace was even more dramatic than that of Horus' own fall. McNeill did a great job in giving life to the character and personality of the Emperor's Children Legion. Their strive to be perfect in all things was their strenght and the battle against the Laer showed it, but it also showed how it was also their weakness and would lead to their inevitable fall from grace.

Fulgrim was a very quick read and in that McNeill did seem to rush certain subplots and characterizations. I disagree that the subplots involving the remembrancers were superflous. They were a necessary thread in how the Fulgrim and his legion were seen as not just superhuman warriors, but as patrons of the arts as well. But like all things when people strove for perfection it also leads to overindulgence and their love of the arts opened the legion and their Primarch Fulgrim into embracing hedonism as the way to perfection.

I do think the novel could've benefited from another hundred or so pages if just to bring more life to Fulgrim's brother Primarch Ferrus Mannus and his Iron Hands Legion. Ferrus Mannus and his no-nonsense Iron Hands made for a great counterpoint to Fulgrim and his Children, but with so many subplots going on in the book McNeill seem to have rushed and shortchanged the Iron Hands and their leader. Maybe they will get their own book (rumor has it that the Horus Heresy series will touch upon all the 18 known Legions and their Primarchs) down the line.

The final act of the book deals with the Battle of Istvaan V and McNeill has a way in describing the chaos and brutality of the battle between Astartes. The battle unfolded just exactly as described in brief in the Horus Heresy artbooks even down to the intervention of a behind-the-scenes manipulator which finally makes Fulgrim's fall complete. This last act alone could've taken up a whole novel all on its own and with some of the novels intersecting in certain events of the Heresy the battle may just get more detail in later books.

In the end, Fulgrim was not a perfect book from McNeill but it was still a very good entry to the Horus Heresy series. In fact, I would say that this book was better in showing how Chaos can seduce and turn one of the Emperor's own sons against him than how Horus himself was turned. While Horus was manipulated by outsiders, Fulgrim still had a chance to reject the lure of Chaos but had little will to do so. I can't wait for the next book in the series which will deal with my favorite legion and Primarch: Lion El'Jonson and his Dark Angels Legion.

Fulgrim is more grim than fulfilling (more like a 2.5)

As the latest addition or book 5 of the Horus Heresy I was very excited to continue reading how the 31,000 century turned half of the Emperor's sons against him. This title of the book is also the central character or Primarch of one of the 20 Legions of Space Marine. Fulgrim is the Primarch of the Emperor's Children (EC) Spare Marine Legion and is held in high regards with his fellow Primarchs and the Emperor himself.

The story begins with a very quick pace with the EC in battle with a strange alien race that makes its home on a mostly watery planet. But as the Emperor deemed death to aliens and heretics its is the job of the EC to cleanse the galaxy. During the battle McNeill does a cursory job of character development and at points you will find yourself wondering which Captain is in charge of which unit since he seems rather flippant to keeping with the Codex and the approved battlegear for each company. Also, one other thing I must point out is the rich descriptions of the terrain and battles are a nice point but in the following paragraph he ruins the pace and imagery by jolting the story back to the confines of the galactic fleets grimy corriodors with the trival story of two rembrancers who ultimately play little to the overall story, unless you enjoy the symbolism of art turing everything evil.

One of the previous reviews describes the arm pumping in the air and its true! I recalled after the third arm pumping that McNeill was grasping at capturing the mood of the battle turning in favor of the EC and has possibly come to a precipice in his writing. Another example of this is his failing to realize that Fulgrim would not have turned so quickly to better himself and allow Fabius Bile to experiment with the geneseed right under his nose. And the previous books had appearances of other EC like Eidolon and Lucius but neither of these characters played a large role in this book. It would have weaved a much richer and engrossing tale if those characters actions would have been more developed in this book than focusing on the rembrancer who defecates in her paint pot to get the right color of brown!

One part of the story I found extremely enjoyable was the part that was covered in an early book where Fulgrim links up with Horus and they walk into his chambers. In the earlier book you have no idea what occured both that they were in there for several days and when Fulgrim appeared he left immeadiately leaving Lord Commander Eidolon in charge of the EC assigned to Horus. McNeill did a good job of covering the discussion between Horus, Fulgrim and Erebus. YES! Eerebus! It takes only a few minutes to read that part and although it was nice to see how Horus was able to convince Fulgrim to support his heresy. On the flip side of the coin I wish that there was more of those moments in this book.

With the story ultimately leading to the events on Istavaan III and V the time line seemed very rushed to get this book to closure. The EC find themselves on the landing zone on Istavaan V and your witness to the LZ slaughter of the Iron Hands and Salamanders at least you think you are. Because at the end McNeill gives you the get out of jail free card and explains how several units were able to escape 6 Legions! Bah! In the end this book is a story of tragedy and traitorous actions. Primarch killing his own Space Marines, Primarch killing Primarch, Legions killings Legions, and a Slaanesh Demon taking shape outside the Warp and forever taking over Fulgrim.

If you are new to the Horus Heresy I'd like to tell you not to start with this book. If you have been keeping up with the other 4 books then this is such a quick read try and grab it at a discount store. Because it is under 500 pages for $8.99 its almost too much to pay and with the cursory character development I'd recommend waiting till this is in the bargain bin. But if your a die-hard, hard-core 40K fan and have $10 burning in your pocket than pick it up and enjoy a quick read that actually leaves you finding more holes in the Hersey story than the other 4 books.

The work of Avro Manhattan

Perhaps the best way to define Avro Manhattan’s work is to quote the Foreword of another book: Lucien Gregoire's The Vatican Murders: The Life and Death of John Paul I:

"In the 1980s, Avro Manhattan warned of the papal threat to force economic movement toward Marxism in the western world:

`The lack of importance the United States gave to the election of a pope after the death of pro-American Pius XII through the election of John Paul II has become paramount in the thinking of subversive elements in the United States--the lingering evidence too striking to be ignored.

The failure of the United States to influence the election of a pro-American Pope in 1963 was a lesson not to be repeated. The blatant adverse consequence of that blunder enormous, the price astronomical in terms of lost opportunity and the deployment of policies and billions spent by the United States counteracting the subversive actions of Paul VI.

Paul disseminated his pernicious and anti-American principles via encyclicals condemning the basic capitalistic tenets upon which the United States had been founded. He condemned the imperialism of money and private property claiming to give wealth and land to the poor was to give them God's province...

Paul's doctrine `Liberation Theology' took on horrendous roots where the poor were collectively dominant in Latin America, the stability of which was severely threatened. When they reached Central America, military and undercover operations had to be undertaken by the United States to halt Paul's revolution of the poor.

His doctrine `Populorum Progressio'--every man a fair share--fueled the movement toward communism in Europe forcing CIA intervention in Italy where Aldo Moro's `Historic Compromise' threatened to bring about a communist state.

In the spring of 1978, Moro was kidnapped while en route to the House of Representatives on the morning he was scheduled to move communist ministers into control of Italian Parliament. On thus same morning, Moro's closest friend and Paul VI's voice in Italian Parliament (Cardinal Volardo) was found dead in a darkened stairwell in a remote corner of the Vatican Bank.

In the wake of the Moro murder, Paul's sudden and unexplained death was wrapped with subtle speculations and vague rumors. His deterioration had been so extremely unusual whispers concerning the acceleration of his demise circulated.

These suspicions were well justified when his death was met with delight in the headquarters of the CIA and the Pentagon which had labeled him the `Pro-Communist Pope.'

Nevertheless, the providential death of Paul VI gave the CIA the opportunity to carry out its scheme to force election of a pro-American Pope. It joined factions inside the Church backing the Opus Dei anti-Communist candidate Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyla...

When the avowed Marxist--Albino Luciani--was elected, it struck a nerve of shattering proportions in the United States. In CIA headquarters the ball began to roll...'" (end of quote of Avro Manhattan)

The last days of Avro Manhattan

As a follow up to his thesis as to the murder of John Paul I in the 1980s, in 1990 a leak in the London Times disclosed that Avro Manhattan was writing a book proving: `The conspiracy that planned the Great Vatican Bank Scandal was the same conspiracy that plotted the Murder of John Paul I and other Marxist leaders in the western world.' The leak claimed Manhattan had proof linking the CIA and Opus Dei to the murders of Aldo Moro, John Paul I and his left-wing counterpart in the Orthodox Church - Metropolitan Nikodim, and a score of others.

Unfortunately, Manhattan died before he was able to publish his book. A week after the leak appeared in the press, Baroness Manhattan returned from Paris to find him dead in their South Shields' home (the reason no biography cites his date of death).

In 2013, Lucien Gregoire wrote The Vatican Murders: The Life and Death of John Paul I. Employing a barrage of testimony of the courts that tried the Vatican Bank Scandal, together with medical and criminology advancements not available to Manhattan at his time--Gregoire proves Avro Manhattan's thesis: The conspiracy that planned the Great Vatican Bank Scandal was the same conspiracy that plotted the Murder of John Paul I.

These two marvelous books complement each other well. Goodall has significantly revised R.C. Zaehner's book on Hindu scriptures (Everyman, 1966) by deleting some parts and adding the Yajnavalkya-Smrti (a work on conduct, legal proceedings, and penitential rites), the first seven chapters of the Kirana-Tantra (a work on initiation into the Saiva Siddhanta cult), and the Bhagavat-Purana (a work expressing popular devotionalism). Goodall's brief introduction is helpful, but mainly the book provides fresh translations of portions of the Rig and Athavara Vedas, some Upanishads, and the Bhagavad-Gita. Powell's work is a useful introduction to the Hindu scriptures. It gives information on their composition, summaries of their content, and demonstrations of their significance for Hinduism. The first chapter provides solid guidance on how to read a sacred text and offers an overview of the immense and complex Hindu canon. Powell also includes a glossary of Hindu terms and even diagrams such as the one showing the Mahabharata family tree. While Goodall's work provides an excellent place to begin becoming familiar with the most significant Hindu scriptures, Powell's work offers a more extensive introduction to many of the same basic Hindu texts. Solid source book. Great as a textbook.

I have used this book in my introduction to Hinduism class for eight years now. I haven't found any other source book that stands up to it. Too many other anthologies give us the "Reader's Digest" version of the scriptures and the choice of what to take out and what to leave in tends to reflect the philosophical predilections of the editor. There is a bit of that here (esp. in the Veda section -- which tends to present us with passages that will be developed in later Vedanta), but he gives us an almost complete version of the Brhadaranyaka and Chandogya upanisads (i.e., not just the famous passages). His inclusion of the Yajnavalkya smriti as well as a (albeit small) sampling of late medieval tantra and bhakti literature makes for a good base of scripture to build any Hindusim course on. Of course, this book should be complimented by other works discussing what Hindus actually do with these texts (e.g. Pintchman's "Guests at God's Wedding" or Fuller, "Renewal of the Priesthood"). But this is a great place to start!

The best resource for TCKs that I have ever read!

A Lewis & Clark College colleague discovered Tina Quick's book while attending the OACAC (Overseas Association for College Admission Counseling) conference this year. He loaned me the book for the weekend and I haven't given it back yet! I've ordered my own copy for the office. I love this book and feel that it is the most helpful resource for TCKs (Third Culture Kids) that I have ever read. While based on research, it is easy to read and very, very practical. TCKs will appreciate the real life experiences of their peers and will come away with good advice no matter where they open the book and start reading. After digesting the section on relationships, TCKs might actually understand why they initially have so much difficulty making US friends. This book gives students lots of good, sound, practical advice that they can use before and during their transition to university. Last week I sent an email to my new incoming first year TCKs (and their parents) suggesting that they buy the book and read it in the month before new student orientation begins. As a TCK herself and as a mother of three TCKs, Tina Quick knows her subject well and speaks with authority. But, she does so in a manner that students will enjoy.

Insightful and Practical

I wish this book was available when I, a Global Nomad, returned to my passport country and entered college! It fills an important niche that has been vacant for too long. I love Tina's style of writing for she writes clearly and gives wonderful examples for the Global Nomad making this transition. I had a difficult time putting down her book. She is most knowledgeable and has certainly done her research. The book is filled with interviews of Global Nomads and those who work or study them. I think Tina went the second mile with her writing as she ends each chapter with the key points of that chapter and where one might find more materials on that topic, etc. It is not a book filled with philosophy and research studies, but a most practical book that a university bound student can put into their backpack and understand what is going on within them. The chapter on hidden grief is the most important one in the entire book. It is the perfect companion book to David Pollock and Ruth VanReken's book "Third Culture Kids:Growing Up Among Worlds". In my role as a mental health counselor, this book will be high on my referral list to all Global Nomads and their parents.

Tina Quick's book is the book that has been missing for years from our library of books about raising and educating children overseas. In fact, it seems that "transition to college" is where all the help books and "owner's manuals" for parenting stop. However, transition to college for any student is a major life change. Couple that transition with the issues that a Third Culture Kid faces and it's no wonder that many of these young people have a very difficult time adjusting. I have been telling every one of the college-bound students I advise, their parents, and my professional college counseling colleagues about the importance of this book. And parents - if you can't get your own teen to read the book yet - read it yourself so that if he/she calls home frustrated or in tears, you'll be able to better support them!

Sometimes lyrical, this memoir by a German youth who miraculously survived four tours of duty on the Russian front during WWII—he died on his fifth deployment—is a significant historical document. It is also a laborious and overwrought cacophony of Wagnerian proportions. Reese, who was a 20-year-old bank clerk in 1939 when he was first drafted, inhabits many different worlds, all of them conflicting. Despite Schmitz's assertion that Reese was "no Nazi," he was, like the vast majority of German youths of the time, deeply imbued with Nazi ideology and experienced the war as a sort of sacrament. Duty, abdication and heroism are just some of his motifs. Reese sees himself as a poet deciphering the human condition, but mostly he is just a soldier who plays his part in the atrocities—often exuberantly. He laughs with the other members of his platoon at the spectacle of Russian partisans hanging by the neck—"yellow-brown ichor dribbled out of their eyes and crusted on their cheeks"—and makes Russian women dance naked. Despite its long-winded homilies and repetitiveness, this stark testimony provides new insights into both the ravages of Nazi indoctrination and the bloodiest military campaign in history. (Nov.)

"We are war. Because we are soldiers

I have burned all the cities, strangled all the women, brained all the children, plundered all the land. I have shot a million enemies, laid waste the fields, destroyed the churches, ravaged the souls of the inhabitants, spilled the blood and tears of all the mothers. I did it, all me. I did nothing. But I was a soldier."

Thus begins Willy Peter Reese's "A Stranger to Myself: The Inhumanity of War: Russia, 1941-1944. Winston Churchill may have said that history is written by the victors, but the recent discovery and publication of these memoirs provides some evidence that history's `losers' sometimes also have a chance to contribute. A Stranger to Myself is a valuable addition to our collective memory.

Willy Peter Reese was a recent high school graduate and a trainee bank clerk when he was drafted into the German army in the spring of 1941. The German invasion of the USSR, Operation Barbarossa, began during Reese's basic training. Like many of his fellow soldiers, Reese thought he would be home by Christmas. Reese was quickly disabused of this notion once he found himself in the middle of what may be the most brutal fighting in the history of humanity (or inhumanity). Not only was the war on the eastern front fought between armies but it was a war in which brutality was inflicted on the civilian population on an unprecedented scale. In addition to the Holocaust inflicted on the Jews of Poland, the Ukraine, and Belarus, millions of other Poles, Ukrainians, and Russian civilians lost their lives through hunger or murder, along with millions of Red Army and German prisoners. As noted so aptly in the Preface, Reese found himself in the "greatest abattoir in human history".

This memoir emerged in 2002 and represents the reflection of Reese on life in the abattoir. Reese kept a diary during his time as a soldier. He'd set out his thoughts on every scrap of paper he could find. He would write during lulls in the horror or sitting in an army field hospital after being wounded. He wrote long letters home to his mother and father. Sent home in late 1943 after being wounded, Reese took his diary and those letters home and turned it into a manuscript. He left his manuscript with his mother and returned to the front. He was killed in 1944. His mother kept all his documents as a shrine to her dead son. A Stranger to Myself was published in Germany in 2002 and has now been translated (very capably by Michael Hoffman) into English.

Reese was well-read and considered himself a poet. As such these memoirs are unusual for its florid prose. The writing is not terse but extravagant in its description of Reese' desperate mood swings during his time on the front. However, the ornate prose, which would seem utterly pretentious in a piece of fiction, serves as a stark and compelling contradiction to the horrors that Reese writes about. Reese does not spare himself. He is brutally honest about the loss of his soul, his absorption with the efficiency of killing and his own mistreatment of the civilian population. It may be asserted that Reese did not mention the Holocaust or go into any great detail about the atrocities he saw committed and perhaps committed himself during his time on the front. That is a fair enough comment to be sure. However, after reading this book it is clear to me that Reese's focus was not war on the grand scale but on the war and its effect on him. These are internal, not external reflections. He, like virtually ever other soldier, was concerned first and foremost with his own or her own survival. The big picture is for other people to draw. Looking at it through that lens, Reese's memoirs are frank and brutally honest. He does not praise the war and in fact finds it irrational and unforgivable that his country waged it. Yet at the same time he has no aversion to participating in the fighting and the drinking and the looting that takes place. He displays a certain arrogance towards the people whose land he helps occupy. He wrestles with his demons and lays it out for the reader. Anyone who has seen this horror cannot believe in God he writes, yet he cannot help but think that the sins he and his comrades commit are unforgivable. We see him sink to a depth where it seems there is no turning back, where he stands up from his slit trench in order to be shot by Soviet snipers, only to see his spirits revive a bit when he gets a days rest or finds a bit of food to eat.

Reese's story is an important one for many reasons. It makes for compelling reading and it will have an impact on the reader that will linger after the book is read and put back on the shelf.

Terror, boredom, revulsion, obedience...life as cannon fodder.

A remarkable book which left a deep impression on me. At once literary in style and harrowing in its descriptions of life as cannon fodder, albeit thinking, passionate, feeling cannon fodder.

Willy Peter Reese was no hero. I am not even sure he was brave. However, as a good German boy he did his duty to the fatherland. First he trained to put on the "mask" of the soldier. Then he went of to war in Russia, mask in place.

He passed through a land where atrocities were the reality. He pillaged food from the starving. During the German Army's massive, fighting retreat Reese's unit was always among the last to get the order to fall back. His young eyes took in the full terror of the Nazi's scorched earth terror tactics. And he was part of it.

Along with his comrades, he routinely drank himself into some other world. When there was no other way to move it, he and his fellow soldiers relentlessly dragged the unit's artillery piece. Day after day. Month after month. Year after year.

All the while, his young mind processed what he witnessed. Temperatures so cold he could only cry. A body infested with parasites. Legs and feet with open oozing wounds. Taking shelter in hand dug hovels. Corpses hanging from trees, lying in ditches, everywhere. In between the bouts of horror and killing, however, were sights of beauty and moments of mental and spiritual clarity. His writing only stopped when his life ended.

Yes, Reese was trying to write like a writer. His loves were Rilke and others of that ilk. His book though, must be taken as a whole. To dissect it, to say this part is too wordy or that part is too introspective, is to miss the point. No, Willy Peter Reese was not a hero. He did his duty as he saw it. He tried to stay alive. He was not brave. Surely, then, he was the typical German male of the day who was thrust into a situation over which he had no control. He did not rage against his lot nor did he relish it. He simply existed through it as best he could.

A fascinating read

I stumbled on this book why visiting some sites about Stalingrad. It was mentioned by a couple posters so I decided to give it a read. I was not disappointed.

This is not a book looking for hard facts about places and people. It's the writings of a man coming to terms with war and how it changed him.

There is a great deal where the author goes into vivid descriptions about feelings, memories, and impressions of his surroundings. This could annoy some people.

Do not look for detailed descriptions of tactics and strategy.

What makes this book interesting is the contrast of hope and despair. The prose that starts a chapter changes to despair over time. There are ample descriptions of soldiers abusing people, looting, and drinking. Reese tells of his own actions and in the end drinks heavily. He even decided to get himself killed or wounded by standing up from a trench.

There is no propaganda in the book. He does not preach the glory of Hitler. Yet, he also doesn't mention other things such as the holocaust. There is even a reference to a friend in Auschwitz.

Towards the end of the book I got the impression he decided to die in Russia. There isn't anything obvious to state this idea. It's just how it read to me.

There are photos in the book ranging from his early days, joining the army and even a Red Cross report telling where it is thought that Reese died.

It is a good thing this book was published. The mother held his writings till she died. One aspect that is useful is that it goes contrary to a belief that the German army was clean in it's actions in Russia. I have read more then a few comments from people that argue the Germans were noble while the Russians were savage.

Probably the most prophetic comment was the end of the book:

"The war went on. Once more I went out there. I loved life."
