Great Sci-Fi from Piers Anthony

I read this series awhile back, but I clearly recall how enjoyable it was. The Kirlian Quest is a galaxy wide romp. 'Kirlian' comes from the 'Kirlian Aura' that displays around every intelligent being. Anthony shows his vivid imagination in this series by creating some very interesting aliens, and by going into great detail into thier mating habits, physiology, and peculiar views on existence.

He also has an imaginative method of interstellar travel - basically if you want to travel across light years - you find a willing host (one is found for you by the destination spot) and transfer your mind from your human (or alien body) into a willing host across the vast gap of light years. So the traveller ends up in a totally unique alien body.

This should appeal to all, but especially Anthony's more mature readers who may want a break from the Xanth novels. Don't get me wrong, I like Xanth, but I have always prefered his Sci-fi work. For other good Anthony sci-fi reads, check out the Orn, Ox, and Omnivore trilogy. His older novel Chthon is also quite good.

A strange, imaginative epic

The surreal quality of the characters and incidents in Kirlian Quest renders it similar to Michael Moorcock's Dancers at the End of Time series. In Piers Anthony's world the power of a being is determined by its Kirlian aura and those with high auras have the ability to heal by touch. They can also 'Transfer' to different galaxies in the universe, hence opening possibilities for intergalactic communication that doesn't involve physical travel.

Before the main thrust of the story begins, Herald the Healer from Sphere Slash, Andromeda, meets Whorl of Precipice and Smallbore of Metamorphic, both who foreshadow dangerous events. One of these is love - Herald finds himself besotted with Psyche, whose fluctuating aura hints that she may be a guardian of one of the Ancient Sites. These sites must be found and used to defeat the non-Kirlian (without aura) Amoeba. The Amoeba threatens to overwhelm all known space with its high technology travel known as mattermission.

Anthony winds together these abstract concepts with fluidity and humour. He instils an affection for Herald, who despite his high aura and power, has a weakness for personal affairs. Should he save the known universe for its own sake, or for his love of Psyche and is his love of Psyche genuine, or does he love her only for her high aura?

The only thing denying this book five stars is its 330 page length. One feels that 2/3 through the book the novelty has worn off. But its dialogue, strangeness, and xeno-creativity will have you reading to the end.

Some respect. Piers Anthony is a godfather of sciefi/fantasy fiction. His worlds absorb you, his visions are INTENSE and supreme. he explores worlds and realities on the edge. Period. Forgive any e-translation typos. He ROCKS supreme!

This book put me on the correct path to a job I love.

I have an older version of this book. I'd like to take a look at the current version and plan to do so soon. I'm interested in taking another look because I have a friend who's interested in a new career and I thought this series might help him.

This particular book was the one that put me on the path to my career in publishing. I was lost, in and out of college, switching majors every semester, until I had to settle on one or drop out. So, I dropped out and got a "pass-the-time" job. While I was thinking about returning to school, I was browsing in a bookstore one day. Somehow, I found the career/reference section, and found this book, which seemed to be written just for me! I am a bookworm! It brightened my day. It wasn't so in-depth, but perfect for someone who might need to explore several possibilities when they are a lost soul. It let me a most important thing: most careers for bookworms start with an English degree. There I was, found. You may think that's common sense, but not all of us are common-sensical. Secondly, even working in a bookstore can get you places, if you want to move on. I got a job at a bookstore, I knew someone there with an internship at a publisher, she suggested I apply for an internship there, and I did. I now work there! Never underestimate the power of the book. Even one that looks like a quick read.

Many wonderful career ideas for bookworms

As a dedicated bookworm, how could I resist checking this book out? Authors Marjorie Eberts and Margaret Gisler provide an astounding number of careers that might appeal to those who love to read, from the expected, such as a librarian or book reviewer, to ones people might not ever have considered, such as becoming an indexer or doing government research. They also include interviews with various individuals about how they got their jobs and how they find them interesting. If you are a bookworm, there is certain to be a job (most likely more than one!) in here that will appeal to you! It would be a great book to give to a young person who loves to read, but is unsure what to do with his or her life.

Meh - useful but not earth-shattering

This book was pretty good, gives you a good idea of what it's like to work in literary careers such as publishing, what education/experience is necessary to get your foot in the door, and what the path up the ladder can be like. However, it didn't deliver any non-obvious suggestions for potential career paths. I did not have any "WOW, I never thought of being a ---" moments.

One Of A Kind On .NET Components And C# Programming

Without any second thought I will place this book among the best books on the subject ever published. I hope everybody will agree that there are only a few books that worth reading from the beginning to the end without skipping a page. To me this is one of those rare books.
The author manages to reflect on broad architectural concepts and yet be extremely specific. He was able to present the most complicated aspects of component oriented programming and the C# language in a very simple, yet concise manner. Many complex issues that may turn off even experienced programmers are described in a way that not only are very well understood, but could easily be migrated into a working program. The author has found an absolutely perfect balance of presenting general architectural aspects of the subject he is discussing and real life implementation techniques.
I truly believe that anybody who is dealing with such aspects (to name but a few) as serialization, asynchronous invocation, multithreading, reflection, events, delegates, deterministic finalization, etc., MUST read this book.
By the way, this author has published another wonderful book on Windows Communication Foundation - "Programming WCF".

A real gem of a book

After a very long time I have come across a book that is really fabulous. Most of the programming books are too bulky and they waste all the pages in explaining only the documentation rather than the architecture. Most of this documentaion can be obtained on the web. This book explains the principles and the architecture behind all the commonly used .net concepts. I highly recommend this book. However, do not buy this book if you are planning to learn .net and have never used it before. This book caters to programmers who have had at least some programming experience in .net previously.

Take the next step

This book is about half the size of many of my other .NET programming books, and yet I've used about twice as many concepts from it than the bigger books. Computer books are just bloated today because publishers know we knowledge hungry programmers are drawn to the supersized books. Well, this book breaks the mold. It is clear, concise, potent and modestly sized. For example, chapter 11 on context and interception and the logging component example is awesome. If you want to take the next step as a .NET programmer, read this book.

About the Author
Jason Welker teaches International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement Economics at Zurich International School in Switzerland, where he has lived with his wife since 2008 (and as of 2012, his new daughter). Prior to teaching in Zurich, Jason taught Economics at the Shanghai American School in China. Jason graduated from university with degrees in Economics and Education after spending his own high school years living and studying at an international school in Malaysia. Jason created his website, Welker’s Wikinomics, in 2007 to provide his students with online learning resources, including a wiki and a blog. Great Review Book!

Great book for reviewing. I bought this book to revise for my IB Economics HL exam in may. It explained all the key concepts, explained the diagrams and gave examples, it really helped me understand the topic of Microeconomics even better. I would recommend this book for any AP or IB students, it really gives you a detailed overview of macroeconomic objectives.

Classic, so good that it's back in print

My father read the original Doc Savage pulps when he was a teen ager with money his father gave him for enteratinment. Years later, when Bantam Books reprinted them, he bought each and every one for me as they came out. There's nothing like a Doc Savage adventure (except for the next Doc Savage adventure) and I still thrill to new issues as the latest set bearing the original covers and closer to original size Nostalgia editions dribble out into public view.

Years later, when Farmer wrote Tarzan Alive I ate that book up, reading several times in a row. So deep and wonderful, connecting all these fantasy characters together in a manner I'd never seen before. It was one of my first encounters with the guy who would become one of my favorite authors. But this isn't really about that.

Finding Farmer's treatise on Doc Savage on my local bookstore's shelves was nothing short of amazing. Shorter and more accessible than the epic Tarzan Alive effort, due to the focused subject, His Apocalyptic Life quickly became a favorite that was re-read and referenced on a regular basis. Surely when I had a chance to visit the Empire State Building later in life, I thrilled as I passed the 86th floor knowing what lay on the other side.

But enough fancy and fantasy. This is a solid book, a great addition for any Doc fan. Especially those who have read all the original series, and those who may be discovering the additional tales penned by Farmer and Murray. Highly recommended.

Note: if you've read this book before, it's worth picking up the 2013, Meteor House, hardcover (revised, expanded) edition again for the additional material included. It's the third copy on my shelf, and I don't regret it's purchase at all!

A lot of fun

Doc Savage is one of those enduring pulp icons who will always have a cult following no matter how many years pass since his heyday. The creation of writer Lester Dent, Doc Savage was a combination private eye/crusading scientist/super hero who, with the help of his loyal assistant, managed to defeat some of the most evil threats that mankind has ever had to face. Certainly a bit corny but always a great deal of fun, the Doc Savage tales were always amongst the best of their type and, as the world continues to get more and more complicated, there's something wonderfully reassuring about entering into Doc Savage's world and discovering that evil can always be defeated by one bronze skinned genius. For this reason, Doc Savage continues to maintain a loyal fan base into the present day. One of these fans was the late science fiction writer Phillip Jose Farmer (creator of the Riverworld series and several other underground classics). Farmer wrote Doc Savage, His Apocalyptic Life as an obvious labor of love. While he goes out of his way to try to accurately document the mythos of Doc Savage (though some critics are correct when they point out that he sometimes draws conclusions that are far more Farmer than Dent), Farmer does so with a welcomed tone of uptmost (if still bemused) seriousness. Treating this book as not just a long fan letter but instead as an actual biography of an actual man, Farmer affords Doc Savage fans a dignity that others who have attempted to write about classic pulp icons haven't.
The book to a certain extent acts as a sequel to Farmer's better known (but, to me, of lesser quality) Tarzan Alive. As in the Tarzan book, Farmer concludes with lengthy and imaginative geneaology in which he manages (with not too many excessive liberties taken with their established canons) to show that every pulp hero was in some way related. Along with Tarzan, Doc Savage is soon to be related to Bulldog Drummond, James Bond, Nero Wolfe, The Scarlet Pimpernil, Prof. Challenger, the Shadow, and just about anyone else you could think of. No, its not meant to be taken seriously but, like the original Doc Savage stories themselves, its still a lot of fun.

Doc Savage: His Apocalyptical Life by Philip Jose Farmer

Doc Savage was the hero of Doc Savage magazine, first published in March 1933. It lasted for 181 issues, the last being released Summer 1949. Doc was a super-man, fantastically intelligent, skilled at every major (and minor) science. He was immensely strong as well, the result of a two hour workout he does every day without fail.

Taught by masters the world over, Doc is a master of disguise, a linguist of tremendous versatility, skilled in woodcraft and tracking, and expert in any number of unarmed self-defense tactics.

His Fabulous Five are men he first met in a WWI prison camp. They are highly skilled in their profession, acknowledging only one superior—Doc Savage himself. His men are:

Lt. Colonel Andrew Blogget “Monk” Mayfair an industrial chemist. He is also famous for his pet pig “Habeas Corpus” and long running feud with “Ham” Brooks.
Brigadier General Theodore Marley “Ham” Brooks, perhaps the finest lawyer ever produced by the Harvard Law School. He is known for sartorial perfection in dressing, an ever-present sword cane, his pet ape “Chemistry”, and his long running feud with “Monk” Mayfair.
Colonel John “Renny” Renwick, an engineer known the world over for building roads, bridges, buildings, and dams. He is also famous for two of the largest hands in existence and for knocking panels out of doors.
Major Thomas “Long Tom” Roberts, an electrical genius comparable to Edison. The runt of the group, Long Tom looks undersized and unhealthy. He can whip nine out of ten men, and the tenth wouldn’t have it easy.
William Harper “Johnny” Littlejohn, a College Professor, archeologist and geologist. Apparently he worked as a Military Consultant during the war or perhaps as an Intelligence Agent. His eccentric ways lend themselves to polysyllabic vocabulary, never using a short word if he can think of a long one.

What Mr. Farmer proposes here is simple. What if Doc Savage was a real person? What if even some of the adventures are actually true events?

Don't waste your money, unless you have to

I was required to buy this text for class. The concepts are easy to follow but none of Gaskell's books seem to worth anything. The only reason he's still in print (I think) is because there are so few Metallurgical engineering authors out there.

1st: the index is terrible. utterly useless.

2nd: the equations are very dissorganized and the overall flow within the chapters are very dissarayed.

3rd: the examples in the chapter help you none whatsoever with the end of chapter problems.

4th: the binding is very poor quality. I bought this book new and withing 2 months some of the pages are hanging on by a thread.

Even my professor does not like this book. We ended up only using it for homework, everything elese my professor used his own notes. I would not get this book if you need a reference, but if it's required for class, good luck to you. I'm sure that there is another text out there that's much more respectable.

"I can't believe you're making me do this." Erick stuffs his hands in his pockets as we walk toward the mall entrance.
His jeans and t-shirt are mud-splattered, and when I look down, mine haven't fared any better. I run a hand over my hair and discover most of it has come loose from the long braid down my back.�
Thank goodness�she�isn't here to see. And Sunday afternoon traffic at the mall is light.
"I can't believe�my mom�is making me do this," I grumble.
He's heard it all before, how I can't stand the thought of going through a cotillion, a big debutante ball to-do for my birthday party. I'd rather be focusing on my martial arts, but my mom insists. Until I turn eighteen, I have to bow to her wishes, including not fighting.
But on Sunday, the day after my birthday, I'll be hunting.
Seven more days until freedom.
For today, Erick and I have to pick out my dress. I think mom knew better than to join me. Ending up in a blowout fight in such a public place would probably ruin her rep with her ritzy friends.�
"Let's get this over with." Surely it won't take long to find something gaudy enough for my mother.
Twenty minutes later, I'm staring at myself in the mirrors surrounding me, the horror I feel reflected on my face. In triplicate.
"It doesn't fit right. Just like all the rest." This is the fifth one.
I know why, even if Erick and the sales lady helping us are too polite to say anything. I'm too flat up top, too tall, and too skinny to pull off any of these formal gowns.
On the other hand, the gowns with strapless or spaghetti straps show off my biceps nicely. Too bad I can't have a�kama--a traditional Filipino weapon, looks like a scythe--as an accessory. But my mom seems to want to forget the weapons part of our family tradition and focus only on this big party.�
"Maybe something knee-length..." the sales lady murmurs, hurrying away from the dressing room.
Take me with you!�I shout silently.
Behind me in the mirror, Erick plays on his smartphone.
I snap my fingers and he looks up; our eyes meet in the mirror. "Is it too much to ask for you to actually look at the dresses?"
He shrugs. "I'm not a chick. You should've asked a girl along if you wanted a commentary on color and frills."
But he knows I don't have any real girlfriends, so I'm not surprised when he puts the phone down next to his thigh and leans forward on his elbows. "It's not�that�bad."
I snort at his blatant lie.�
He crosses his eyes in the mirror at me.�
I stick my tongue out, and it's almost like we're in sixth grade again. Back when everything was easy. Back when my dad was alive.
"I wish I were your sister."
He rolls his eyes. "If you think my dad would let you out of having a debutante, you're crazy."
"At least he'd let me�Chase."
Our eyes meet again in the mirror, serious this time. It's something that's always there in the back of our minds... the vampires we were born to destroy.�
My mom married into a Chaser family, but I don't think she really understood what it meant until after my dad died. In our branch of the family tree, I'm the only one who can carry on the legacy. I can't just let it die, not when it's something I've been born to do. Someone has to step up and protect the humans.
Even if it means she and I part ways after this shindig. I haven't exactly told her my plan, though.
"Try this one." The sales lady bustles back into the dressing area and shoves a pile of magenta fabric into my arms. She pushes me off the carpeted block in front of the mirrors toward the changing rooms.
I'm pulling the dress over my head, wobbling in the unfamiliar high heels the saleslady forced on me earlier, when I hear another male voice join Erick's outside the curtain. I don't pay much attention to it. It's probably another guy here to help his girlfriend find a prom dress. Acting the contortionist to zip the side zipper takes enough concentration. This dress feels like it hugs in all the right places, but there isn't a mirror in this closet-like space, so I push aside the curtain...
And freeze on the threshold.�
Erick isn't alone, and the guy with him is possibly the last person on earth I want to see.

An irrational burst of heat fills my neck and cheeks as Brett's bright blue eyes lock on mine. His shock of short brown hair is as unwelcome as the rest of him. His usual cowboy hat is missing, though the boots are there beneath his jeans.
He wolf whistles and curses softly as his gaze travels the length of my body.
"What are you doing here?" I bark, because I'm pretty sure he's mocking me. I don't trust anything about Brett, not since his betrayal two years ago.
Trying to ignore the hot feeling of his gaze, I march to the block and hop up, examining every minute detail of the dress.
"I was in the neighborhood," he says.
Over my shoulder in the mirror, I see a flash of white teeth against his tanned skin, but I don't respond to his remark.
Erick is suspiciously silent. If my cousin had anything to do with Brett showing up, I'll beat it out of him later.
The sales clerk moves close and tugs at my bodice. "This one fits much better, dear. Makes it look like you've got something up here after all."
The heat in my face intensifies. I don't have any illusions about my attractiveness to the opposite sex, not with my build, but she didn't have to point that out in front of Brett, did she?
"And it makes your legs look great."�
My eyes dart to Brett's in the mirror and our gazes collide. Did he really just say that?
Erick clears his throat and I blink, breaking the connection, but the sudden roiling in my stomach remains.
"Can we get it and go?" my cousin mutters, shifting his feet.
"Fine," I agree.�
The sales clerk motions me to turn around. "Lift your arms, dear. There's a bit of extra fabric here..." She pinches a fingerful of purple beneath my armpits. "We've got a seamstress on staff who can fix this for you in a couple of days. It'll be a perfect fit."
"That's fine. Thanks," I grudgingly say, because it isn't her fault I've got to have the dress.
There's a chance my mother will hate it. I know she wanted me to wear something floor-length, but like Erick said, this�is�the dress. If mother doesn't like it, she can come shopping herself.
"So what's the occasion? Planning a party to celebrate your win this weekend?"�
We both know he's talking about the freestyle martial arts tournament that is sponsored by our dojo. Three days of fighting. It's the biggest event of its kind in this part of Texas. I've been waiting all year to compete. Besides being able to Chase, this is the next most important thing to me, a chance to showcase my talents and prove to my uncle I should be allowed to join the family business.
Brett has wandered closer and continues examining me from head to toe. What is he looking for, the keys to the universe?

I received a copy of this novella from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Emily is trying to get past her eighteenth birthday so her mom can finally stop holding her back from becoming a chaser. She feels like it is in her blood to follow in her family's footsteps.

Emily's ex friend, Brett, comes back into her life after two years of not speaking. Emily believes he threw their championship match but Brett has secrets of his own. While trying to finally rid himself of his feelings for Emily, he ends up falling harder.

I loved the first book in this series. I thought it was pretty neat to see how Emily becomes part of the team. While this novella isn't really a pivotal part of the story, it's pretty interesting side story. I can't wait to read book 2, shadow allegiance.

this book was pretty good but it ended to soon. the characters were easy to like and they bantered very well. more next time please

Kicked butt

Although on the shorter side, I thought this book kicked butt. Emily Santos kicks ass on the mats (she's a black belt) and when she's fighting for her life. She's a Chaser, she protects humans and kills vampires, this is what she was born to do. I loved that even though she's born into a family of Chasers her mom still wants her to dress up like a "lady" and have her debutant ball, like things are normal. Loved Brett, he's sexy, sweet and smitten with Emily..so sexy, tough as nails too and will fight for Emily. Loved Erik too, not only is he Emily's cousin he's her best friend and fellow Chaser. Action packed, kick ass and some sweet lovin to, this story has it all. 4 stars review by Nanee at upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com
