Discovery the Hard Way

For those who appreciate and collect comic novels, REBEL WITH A CAUSE: REVENGE IN SECTOR VII will please. The story is by Biff Schweinebar, the art is by LP + GG, and the lettering is by VICTOR: each contributor is on top of his game. The story deals with a ruling group of Troopers in the police state of Sector VII, enormous beefy, rasty, bullish men (Vinny and Donk) whose methods of control include assorted forms of physical gratification imposed on those in their Sector who would defy the Troopers. In order to infiltrate this smarmy band of sex-obsessed ruffians, a dark figure (whom we only see in the shadows) assigns a young lad sporting a Tee Shirt that reads 'Police Your Self' and our hero must find the hangouts and hideouts of the Troopers. Through a series of incidents the Troopers are followed an led into a back alley where the hero encounters the flesh obsessed meatheads, endures the 'torturing escapades' (little do the Troopers realize that our hero is a turned on recipient).

As the story advances the Troopers sustain a 'tables are turned' and Vinny and Donk must face the fact that the methods of punishing prisoners are truly playing out of their own sexual inclinations! The results are at once hilarious and erotically charged moments of SM stunts that play out the book very well. The content is primarily for the entertainment of bear lovers but the story is so well conceived on every angle that it provides a fine study in comic novel graphic literature. If u r into the Bara scene, then u should give this book a shot. Sexy bear like cops acting like pigs... need I say more? The story is good... But wish it was little bit longer. And the art is nice, but some of the faces do look the same... so it's a little hard to follow. Even still it's not a bad read...

A really kool comic...

When perusing new comic books, two things that first grab my eye are illustration style and
cover contents. This comic scores big (with me) on both accounts, I loved the black and white
clean, uncluttered line drawn style. (Sort of like a "Rex Morgan" comic..) I also like seeing some-
thing different content-wise; when was the last time you saw big burly law and authority types
donning the front cover of a comic? (and not be super heroes with special powers, erc??..)
I was curious to see what the author and illustrators would do with 80 plus pages of what
at first appears to be a basic story line about the law and those on the other side of it. What
evolves is an interesting tale with lots of twists and turns that keeps drawing you in further and
further. By the time you reach the last page, you are already wishing the next volume is being
released next week! I tried to give this comic 4.5 stars (out of 5), but I don't think the rating
resolution goes to 1/2 star. The one small thing I would have liked to see explained is just where
(or what) is "Sector VII".? Is it a parallel time universe, or a small planet that got sucked into a
near earth orbit and absorbed some of the life forms of earth? Maybe just one or two comic
panels to sort of give us all a hint about those big, burly, always carnally obsessed (and hungry)
Troopers. LOL...

It's a succinct review of the History of Western Art. It is fairly extensive in covering the traditional western canon, while being on the shorter side for this type of book. Good if your looking to refresh your memory.

Insightful Analysis about the Sharing of Risk and Return between Entrepreneur and Outside Investor

The book builds on 'Entrepreneurial Finance' by Smith & Smith. Unfortunately, this new version is not as reader friendly as the second edition of this text. The new layout lacks color and is printed in black and white only, something that makes both tables and figures less attractive.

Conceptually, the book is closely related to the previous version. The chapter on venture capital is now presented much earlier in the book which makes the overall flow much better. One of the highlights of the book is the detailed analysis of the relationship between an under-diversified entrepreneur and a well-diversified outside investor. The authors show why an outside investor would participate in a venture and how this investor would participate in the venture's risk and return. Unfortunately, in this version the equilibrium solution is no longer presented. This should be included in any future edition of the book.

I bought this book for a class. My professor for the class is one of the coauthors and i have to say the book shows an easy way to apply important concepts for new Ventures. It is not deeply financial oriented, but has great information on how to finance a venture, and how to valuate new companies when trying to look for Venture Capital or PE.

WORST TEXTBOOK EVER

WORST textbook required in my entire MBA program. Have it for my very last class, subject same title as the book. It's so hard to comprehend the writing I've had to refer back to other textbooks from previous courses to get any kind of grasp on the subject material. Terribly written, confusing beyond measure. AND I'm a finance major with straight A's! Horrible.

a must read for all practitioners who are interested in attraction

The original book on limerence was written by Dorothy Tenov back in the 70's who was the first to describe the condition. Nothing much of substance has been published since until this book which builds upon Tenov's work, utilizing many resources from academic papers to feedback from sufferers. Whilst it is perhaps more academic in its writing and aimed more towards practitioners for which it is essential reading, many limerent sufferers would also benefit from its contents which includes strategies for coping with limerence.

I hope more of the therapeutic community become aware of limerence and its debilitating effects, too few are up to speed on this condition and how to best help their clients. I think part of this is the name, limerence. Its a turn off for many people, why not just call it what it is, obsessional addictive attraction?

Finally, I know what 'it' is...

I stumbled upon "Love and Limerence: Harness the Limbic Brain" pretty much in the same way that I stumbled upon the Limerence concept itself. Both instances were illuminating watershed moments. I read the book in a flash and savoured every page. As much as it is written for academics and professionals, it has huge appeal to laymen too. The vignettes are numerous and apt, directed at all of us who have endured this condition with no name. The authors are legitimate authorities on this fascinating topic. Not only have they taken Tennov's work further, they have also chosen to explore the flipside of the Limerence experience. It is refreshing to be know that potential pathologies can be channeled positively if we are shown how. Dr Willmott & al end the book on a high note by offering diverse therapeutic approaches that Limerent experiencers should consider for healing and growth.

Berkhof's manual is an excellent summary of Reformed Christian doctrine, kind of a "systematic theology lite". He draws from the theology of Calvin and Turretin to give a comprehensive yet very usable overview of the historic faith.

Good Introduction to Reformed Theology

For those looking for an introductory textbook on Reformed theology this book is a good place to start. Berkhof goes over the major evangelical themes in systematic theology (Theology Proper, Anthropology, Christology, Pneumatology, Soteriology, Ecclesiology, and Eschatology). However, he also adds a Reformed slant to it by discussing issues like predestination and covenant. As someone who is outside of the Reformed tradition but holds to the basic tenents of Calvinism, there are more agreements than disagreements with the book. I would highly recommend this book to laypeople and Bible study teachers. It is essentially a condensation of Berkhof's Systematic Theology textbook (removing all the details and difficult terms). Overall, a good introductory book on Reformed theology for laypeople and students.

Great Doctirnal Overview!

This is probably one of the best books to have as a Christian taking seminary classes. I use this book all the time. Berkhof shows a book with simple descriptions of the doctrines in Christianity and several review questions at the end of each section. It is a must have for any Christian because it because gives you all the Biblical passages for all the Christian beliefs. AMEN!

Too shallow and too market-y for my tastes.

The first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the foreword by Robert Martin. In it Martin discusses that John emailed him a zip of the book and wanted a foreword written by a certain date. Martin wasn't able to do so because John only gave him 3 days notice. John sent Martin cheese and a ham and sent Martin multiple emails in which he was "imploring" Martin to write a foreword.

Eventually Martin says he skimmed some of the book in a few hours and wrote a shallow foreword for it. It just befuddles me that it would be included in the book as it is hardly glowing and doesn't put John in a very good light. I'm guessing having a half good foreword by a very well known member of the community beats a great foreword by someone that has no name recognition.

The biggest thing that struck me about this book is how shallow it is. In a book with 71 chapters, it is a bit hard to avoid this. Yet as I read it, I kept thinking about how each chapter could be summarized with a single paragraph in the way that it was written. Each chapter spanned 5-20 pages and contained the same amount of fluff.

All of the knowledge in each of the chapters could be learned by doing a single Google search on the topic. It certainly combines it all into a single place which might be convenient for some but the lack of true insight on the topics was very off putting. In books like these, the value is in the application and new ideas that come about from the author's experience and knowledge. I just didn't see any evidence of this regardless of how much John says that his ideas are brand new and better than the researchers and people that devote their lives to these topics.

The book is comprised of 7 sections: Career, Marketing, Learning, Productivity, Financial, Fitness and Spirit. Considering the shallowness that I mentioned, it would be easy to replace those sections with 7 well chosen and concise books written by researchers in each field with far more knowledge and practical advice.

In an incredibly creepy bit of advice, Chapter 5 entitled, what else other than "Hacking the Interview", John advocates hunting down the people that will be involved in the hiring decision for your interview and influencing them before the actual interview. In one example, he cites a developer that went so far as to find a local club that the hiring manager was apart of and went there and "became friends" with the manager. I think this is absolutely terrible advice that violates basic privacy fundamentals and business ethics. In some respects, it echoes the tactics used to get Robert Martin to write a foreword.

In the section about finances, it was shocking to hear how much of the "hustler" vibe that was given off. From renting out gumball machines (I didn't know that was a thing?), to helping start a payday loan business. I decided to ignore it and continue with the book. After reading it, I went to John's website, Simple Programmer. It completely confirmed my suspicion on the "market-ing" vibe that is given off. Who wouldn't want to "GREATLY increase your income" and "In Three Weeks" learn "How to Build a Blog That Will Boost Your Career" just by signing up for his email course that pops up within seconds of going to the site for the first time.

I'm a big fan of programmer blogs and other resources like that. I also think that there are some resources out there with far better information than this book. The obvious blogs being Joel Spolsky's writings, Jeff Atwood, Paul Graham, and Yegge. There are even some really great podcasts that delve into topics in this book. Software Engineering Radio is one as well as The Changelog, Hanselminutes and others. Really a quick search can help you find some good ones.

To summarize, I think any one that wants to read this would be better off finding individual books on each of the sections and reading them. There also are far better blogs out there with more content than this book. Not only will the advice be much more salient and more plentiful, but you'll also be able to avoid the marketing. If you hope that John's website will be a bit more content rich, you'll be even more disappointed with the shotgun-like approach to articles with a ton of ads and more than enough urgings for you to subscribe to his stuff.

The book I wish I'd had 30 years ago

I've been a fan of John's since I kept finding his blog posts as thought-provokers coming up in search results.

Soft Skills is now up there on my list of core professional books alongside "Pragmatic Programmer" and "Pragmatic Thinking and Learning" (I guess there but for choice of publisher goes "Pragmatic Sweat, Money and Success as a Developer"). It's not a technical book - the most technical thing in it is a recommendation to read "Code Complete" and "Clean Code". It's THE everything-else-apart-from-coding book.

The book is a very easy read with an awesome range of material covered in small, Pomodoro break-sized pieces. So, my recommendation is to skip to chapter 38, start applying Pomodoro as John describes, and give yourself a quota of chapters to digest every day.

My biggest critique is a chapter title - "Brushing your code" really should have been "Flossing your code" - Flossing gets more truly grungy stuff out of awkward corners and lots of feel regularly guilty about not doing it.

I wish, I really really wish, I'd read this book about 30 years ago because I had to figure out a lot of the self-promotional stuff the hard way. I'll probably spend the next 20 years working on my physique and real-estate portfolio.

I'm painfully well-qualified to comment on just how good John's recommendations are because I've applied a lot of them over the last 30 years, including working for myself, remotely and now being in a startup. I can tell you that a lot of the stuff works because I've proved that when you stop following his recommendations, bad things happen.

I was skeptical of this book as John was talking about writing it on his entreprogrammers podcast. John is a source of a lot of great knowledge but his life philosophies and mine do not always fit well. John does point out in the last chapter. “Hopefully you find some of those things useful, even though you might not agree with all of them – and that’s okay.”

The book is much better than I was expecting. The sections on Career, Marketing yourself, Learning and productivity I found outstanding. The sections on Financial, Fitness and Spirit are all topics where I tend to disagree with John more frequently and I feel are covered much better by other authors. John does list many of these references in Chapter 69 – “My personal success book list”.

All in all the book is definitely worth reading even if you don’t agree with everything. That’s okay.

Enhanced with glossaries and indexes, "Fundamentals of Cancer Epidemiology" is highly recommended for college medical science and health collections.

The Epidemiology of Genetic Error

I'm finding Nasca and Pastide's tome on the Epidemiology of Cancer of great help to me in my own preparation of a monograph on the 'Origins of Cancer.' The authors meticulously follow the epidemiology of a killer with special emphasis on heredity; tobacco; alcohol; radiation; infectious; exogenous; dietary; hormonal and multifactorial causes.

I'm grateful that the authors don't fall into the all-too-familiar trap of trying to identify underlying mutagens as the cause of most human cancers. Mutagenic factors are significant in some cases but I am of the opinion that physical, chronic irritative/inflammatory and/or 'benign' cellular proliferations are at the root of most cancers.

The last few chapters of the book of relationships.

I'm very picky and critical of self-help books, but Vaughan's Uncoupling is the next best thing to a counsellor. More than a psych book, it is the definite beginning-middle-end about how couples become uncoupled.
I picked up this book by instinct, as I needed to read something--anything--about how relationships end. I don't care about the why's anymore; I just wanted to understand what was happenning in my own relationship.
This book will not tell you how to save your relationship, or whether it's worth saving or not. Vaughan argues that there is a pattern to how relationships end. And in the telling, she gives the story that makes sense of everything--and that is all we need when we go row into the choppy waters of a faltering relationship.

The devestating truth you may not be ready to hear or face

Regrettably, chances are that you will look for and find this book far too late in the process of uncoupling to save your own relationship. For the "initiator" has all the power to end or save a relationship and put the "partner" through hell in the process.
If you're the initiator, stop what you are doing, read this book and carefully consider the spiraling path to relationship destruction you are on.
Either way, I believe that you will learn more from reading this book than a dozen others. Much more than from marriage counselors or even Psychologists.
But the truth may be hard to take. It was for me as I was looking for help in saving my relationship from my wife's affair. Alas, she had long since started a transition out of our relationship and redefining me in negative terms.
This book will help you understand why the person you love can turn on you like a rabid dog, rip your beating heart from your chest, throw it in a blender and hit frappe!
Eventually you will want answers whatever the emotional cost and this book is filled with them.
However, if you are one of the fortuitous or lucky ones fortunate enough to find this before it is too late, then read, learn and act now before your life is sucked through a crushing black hole of change very few are ready for.

Read this one as a starting point for thoughtfulness about the patterns in relationships

I honestly think the author might just as well have called this one "Unfriending" or "unconnecting" or something similar and reached even a wider audience, although the focus is primarily on couples and marriages.

However, if your primary goal is knowing how this one could help your marriage, here's my take:

Instead of focusing on THE reason or reasons that marriages and relationships fall apart, the author notes that the process of separation - and, inevitably, divorce or estrangement - occurs even before the warning signs may be apparent. That infidelity that seems to be the "cause" of the divorce may be just one more step in a long progression of steps that started long before the actual affair. I think this makes sense.

It made sense to me that things may seem normal in a marriage and yet something is a bit worse than the day before, already shifting off-kilter. That is the type of change this book discusses, the veering away from being a couple and the distance that grows wider, day by day. It is the kind of thing that can be easy to dismiss until the inevitable happens - and by then it could be too late for therapy or counseling to help.

Although I'd call this more of a "philosophical study" than hard core science (even though many couples were interviewed, etc), I found it an engaging and intriguing book. This one would be worth reading before marriage and could help turn many precarious marriages back on track.

One of the most interesting parts of the book dealt with how unhappy partners may "revise" marital or relationship history, turning formerly happy memories into negatives in order to justify a separation.

Just to be clear, this review is not being written by a divorced person or someone in an unhappy marriage. I have no bones to pick, no axes to grind, etc. I simply found the book to be worth reading.
