In the medieval system the Pope and Bishops ruled the Church, the Monarch and Lords ruled the State. However, in England from the fourteenth century with the rise of Lollardy, this division was increasingly challenged by the laity's insistence on their right to choose not only between different systems of Church governments but also between different forms of religious belief.

Church and People traces the laity's struggle to achieve supremacy in the English Church and shows how the political and social developments between 1450 and 1660 were decisively influenced by this conflict, as Monarch, Church and Parliament sought to use lay disaffection to further their own political ends. This edition contains a new bibliographical essay.

About the Author
Claire Cross is currently Professor of History at the University of York, where she has taught since 1965. A Cambridge graduate, she was county archivist of Cambridgeshire from 1958 to 1961, and Research Fellow at Reading University between 1962 and 1965. Her other books include The Puritan Earl: The Life of the Third Earl of Huntingdon (1967) and The Royal Supremacy in the Elizabethan Church (1969) and she has edited The Letters of Sir Francis Hastings (1969), York Clergy Wills 1520-1600 (1984 and 1989), with N. Vickers, Monks, Friars and Nuns in Sixteenth Century Yorkshire (1995) and a collection of essays, Patronage and Recruitment in the Tudor and Early Stuart Church (1996).

a bit dry

Claire Cross is obviously an intelligent woman. She uses words and phrases appropriate to the content, but that is obviously geared towards the professional or academic reader. I first tried reading this book a year ago when my understanding of the content was naught. Frusturated, I left the book on the shelves until recently, when I revisited it and understood it for what it is worth. Armchair Historians would benefit in passing this book by.
Cross does an excellent job of explaining how the common people of England began to change theit spiritual thinking from that of the dictated Catholic Church to the free and open Prodestant Church. She focuses on aspects such as litarcy, the printing press, faith of the monarchs and general public opinion. From Luther to Lollards and beyond, this book does a fair job of explaining the phenomonon that is the Reformation.

All the feels!!!!

Sexy and heartfelt. Such a roller-coaster of emotions. I even caught myself smiling while reading this! Brady really is absolutely perfect. So intune with Cora's needs, even though she is a hot mess of emotions. Britni Hill...you nailed this!

What an emotional read! I loved Brady and Cora individually and I loved them together. You can feel their connection as you read their story. Britni did an amazing job of writing about a very emotional experience. As someone who has experienced some of the same things as Cora, I can say that Britni hit on a lot of the emotions in a very realistic manner. Not only do you feel Brady and Cora's connection throughout the book and their experiences but you also feel their attraction to one another. They are HOT together!

Loved the story of Cora and Brady

I received this book from the author for an honest review.
The feels of this book……Cora is a mess of emotion and we love her but kinda wonder what the heck is Brady thinking!! LOL I mean he is perfect. He is kind. He is gentle. He is honest and knows when to push and back off of Cora.
Cora had a rough marriage. She was married too young to the wrong guy and made alot of bad decisions that cause her to run home after his death. She is essentially punishing herself FOREVER…that is her plan. Never be happy because she doesn’t deserve to be happy anymore after the awful marriage that her and Mason had. Brady sees her and is interested. He is drawn to her quiet side and soon is pushing her to let him in. The more he pushes the more her walls crumble and the more she spills about her past. She tells him everything EXCEPT the one secret she can’t even breathe out loud. She feels that is her biggest in of all the terrible things in her past. That one is the biggie that no one will forgive or understand why she feels the way she does.
Brady is bit older and also had his wild time. He left home but returned and is part owner of the local coffee shop across from where Cora works. He is just PERFECT. He is falling very quickly for Cora and making her see that life is worth living for. …..ANNND THEN the bomb drops. I think I had it figured out but to actually see what his secret does to Cora was heartbreaking. To see this couple torn apart by life choices they BOTH made hurt my heart. Cora and Brady both have to make major decisions if they are to be together……
The ending chapter made my heart happy. I loved seeing Cora taking chances and opening her heart to the possibility of…….well sorry I can’t tell ya…..but just know that it made my eyes a bit misty.

The scientific supposition supporting the story-that a genetic mutation can be passed via a virus-is murky, and secondary characters like Jeff's bible-thumping father lack dimension. However, few romantic suspense authors know how to write a chase sequence as thrillingly as Squires, and readers who journey beyond the slow first half will find themselves hopelessly engaged.

Susan Squires earned a Masters degree in English literature from UCLA and, as a by-product, learned how much fun research of other times and places can be. scary, edgy, dark....and brilliant!!

Dr. Holland Banks is head of the Century Psychiatric Hospital and president of the Schizophrenia Research Foundation and the phrase "Physician Heal Thyself" is foremost at the front of her brain. It's just not Holly's week. She is suffering from terrible nightmares from which she awakens thinking her hand is an evil being. At first, she chalks this up to her inner feelings of being inadequate. The daughter of a high-powered research scientist, she has never measures up to the mad-scientist daddy dearest's hopes for her. She feels she has to continually push be perfect, in her work, in her appearance, and the only place Holly lets down her hair is her home. She could chalk up the odd dreams to the pressure of younger
doctors wanting her position, and that she always fears someone is going to find out she is not as good as she thinks she should be. Except for one thing: someone is stalking her.
She first sees him outside her exercise club, then later as she is coming out of a restaurant from a meeting with her father. The man is handsome in a rugged way, and dressed in a plaid shirt - always a plaid shirt. Her sense of losing her sanity increased as she begins to hear his thoughts. Someone took a shot at her ...she thought it was the stalker, but the police
point out she was watching his hands at the time and he was not holding a gun. Was someone else shooting at her? Where they shooting at him?
The riddle of the stalker's identity comes to light at a press conference where her father is announcing his breakthrough in genes altering. Holly fears her father is pushing into areas that are not only outside of what is legal, but way beyond what is ethical, and has warned him not to announce she has anything to do with his work. Despite two warnings, Leyland Banks does just this because he needs Holly's reputation ...and more. When the stalker breaks into the conferences and attacks Leyland, Holly's grip on reality slips even further, for she hears what the stalker is thinking.
The man is admitted to her hospital as a patient, and Holly is strangely drawn to the reporter who seems to have gone mad. She is rattled by his blethering about people who thought they were aliens...very similar to Holly's own dream. As she begins to work with the reporter, she starts to fear something dark and sinister is spreading it tentacles throughout the city. There are strange deaths, people disappearing, and a sniper on the loose racking up nearly two dozen kills ...and at the bottom it Holly's fears her father's work is the cause of it all.
Squires continually pushes the edge in her writing. Keeping the reading off balance and pulling them along on the dark ride. It's a first class nail bitter that you won't be able to put down.

This author is awesome and so is the story...

Holland Banks, (Holly), has made a sucessful career for herself as a pschiatrist, despite the fact that she often feels like she is going insane herself. Voices clammer in her head, giving her little peace. It is not until she meets another person with a problem much like her own that she has hope of finding peace.
Jeff McQueen first encounters Holly when he attacks her and her father. Later, when he becomes her patient, Holly finds herself attracted to this strange man who is able to bring silence to her voices. When they touch, Holly and Jeff are able to find peace. They also find that they can hear each other's every thought. They are not the only ones though. Hundreds of people in the world have this blessed curse. Those people are the voices in their head. What is more alarming is that Holland's father is working with a corrupt senator to use as many of these people as possible in genetic manipulations and political schemes that could lead to a world wide nightmare.
Imagine, a world where no one could lie, not even the white, polite lies that are termed diplomacy. In a world built upon lies, the truth is the one thing that could destroy reality. Holland and Jeff must stop the senator from his scheme to control the world. The two lovers set off on a journey across the country, barely a step ahead of an enemy who can invade their very thoughts.
***** One of the best things about Susan Squires is that she always creates a new way to tell stories. Her plot is exciting and thought provoking, and her characters realistic. From politics to religion, she covers all bases. There may be many books about psychics, but there is not one that is like NO MORE LIES. *****

not my cup of tea

Let me preface this by saying that Susan Squires has written some books that I've enjoyed - this just isn't one of them. I have no problem with 'shadowy conspiracy' stories, but I think they're difficult to execute well. For me, this one fell short, and it's hard to explain precisely why without including spoilers. I can say that I found the purported motives of some of the bad guys, and especially one person who shouldn't have been a bad guy, unpersuasive. Also, I found the supposedly positive outcome of the perilous situation the H/h had been in to be horrific in its implications. In addition, I found the pacing of the book to be uneven, and therefore my investment in the lead characters was sporadic too. In short, there are better Squires books in which to invest your time and money.
